Question about 1997 Audi A8
Your car does not have a dip stick for the transmission! audi say its sealed for life. most people believe that this is not true! there is a sunken 17mm hex key in the transmission pan. its very tight! the transmission is filled through this hole until it overflows. there are other requirements. such as the car has to be idling in gear and the temperature of the fluid within a certain range to get an accurate level. not a job for the faint hearted. there is a great write up on how to do this here, http://www.audipages.com/Tech_Articles/auto_transmission/autotranservicing.html;

SOURCE: do not know how to
There I's a 17mm hex head plug at the bottom of the transmission pan you have to get the transmission up to operating temp once it I's up to temp you can then remove the plug if fluid comes pouring out it's full it must be on level ground if it's a lil seepage it's just from the plug u then need to get a pump with a hose on it u can buy at autozone for ten dollars stick the hose inside up through the top there I's pretty much a 90 degree turn inside and then pump and fill till it starts coming out of the hole and the transmission I's full must I repeat must be at operating temp or u will under fill it and cause damage
