ABS light is on but scan tool does not pick up an error code

Is it a code reader or a scan tool ,there is a difference ! An some will just read OBD codes from engine control module . You need to take it to someone who's scan tool can check all modules on the vehicle . Then again in some situations the factory scan tool will only work ! Tip

Check engine light.

When ever you have a check engine light on the first thing to do is to have the computer scanned for codes, these codes will help in finding the problem, when ever the engine or trany or emmisions component fails the computer knows and stores a code or codes and then turns the light on, by scanning the computer and getting the codes, these code will tell you where the problems are with a code #, then with some diagnosing you can pin point the problem. to get the codes a scan tool is needed but most autopart stores will scan and give you the codes for free. so always start with the codes.

the code should be longer.

only a real scan tool can show all codes.
the Innova 3160 scan tool does see all jeep codes. btw.
that is what I use. not ever working blind....

i have the FSM book on this jeep
scan it and we can help.

Changed 02 sensor and all codes are clear but check engine light is still on in my 99 acura cl

press the clear DTC button on the scan tool.
bam, gone.
or you are using a cheap scan tools that does not
all factory codes, and one is set.!
keep in mind, the CEL dont glow for all DTCs
and many scan tools are blind to some or all factory codes
P1xxx and P2xxx are both factory only codes, only
Acura codes,
rule 3> if the scan tool does show say P1xxx code
do not use non Acura data on that code, as its a Acura only code
only P0xxx codes are a standard here, in USA>

in some countries, even P0300 code (gross misfire) in Canada
do NOt glow the CEL, but does store the code
amazing huh?

I don't know whether you can now is the problem but the stop light keeps coming on And then stops

The first step would be to have the computer scanned to see what codes are there. a scan tool is needed to get codes or a auto parts store, but if car will not run then a scan tool or code reader.

You can get your car scanned at car diagnostic center like www.autozone.com or at your local car garage. Once the car is scanned the error code will be detected so as per that you can get the part replaced. At autozone service center its absolutely free to get car scanned.---------------Thank you.

How do you reset the service engine light?

Locate the diagnostic connector. On the 1997 Nissan Maxima the connector is located in the OBD2 standardized location under the driver-side dash, slightly to the right of the steering column. With the ignition key in the "OFF" position, plug the connector of the scan tool into the diagnostic connector of the car. Turn the ignition key to the run position but do not start the engine unless instructed to by the scan tool.

Turn the scan tool on and select "Global OBD2" from the main menu. Select "Diagnostic Trouble Codes" from the first sub-menu, and then "Read Trouble Codes" from the second sub-menu. Write down all listed codes and their descriptions before erasing them. This will save time if you must perform additional diagnostics.

Press the back button on the scan tool until the second sub-menu is displayed, and select "Erase Codes" or "Clear Codes," depending on the manufacturer of the scan tool. A message will appear asking you to confirm your desire to erase the codes and other stored data. Select "Yes". The scan tool will alert you when the codes have been erased.

Test drive the vehicle to verify the repair is complete. The 1997 Nissan Maxima on-board computer will run a series of tests on the systems in the vehicle, including emission control devices. To complete these tests you must take two test drives that include a variety of driving conditions, with a 2-minute cool-down between each test drive. If the service engine soon light does not come back on during these two test drives, you have completed the repairs and the reset.

Check engine light came on....no other apparent issues. what do I check for first?

You will have to get it scanned first to narrow down the problem. Most shops charge $40 - 50 for a scan, but from what i hear, AutoZone will scan it for free - then try to sell you the part that will supposidly fix it.

Get it scanned, then repost what code came up. Let me know how you make out
