How do I change the rear axle seal on a 1986 Chevy 1-ton dully? What is the torque on the nut after the seal has been changed? The rear end is a Dana-70

For the dana 70 the nut to flange is 85 ft lbs.

Pinion seal? Wheel bearing seals? Several different rear axles could be in your 3/4 ton--full float or semi-float. Once again you are wise to buy a cheap shop manual which will tell all.

Rear end is leaking fluid where it connects to the drive shaft


you mean rear axle pinion seal. to change it you need to remove driveshaft. take a torque wrench to see the running torque. then remove center nut ,remove yoke. with screwdriver remove seal; reverse proc. then tight center nut to torque you find before you remove the center nut.

2001 Jeep Cherokee repair front axle shaft seal. How to replace seal.


That job is a ton of labor, considering it's such a small part.
You need to remove both axles (with brakes, rotors and bearing hubs as well) and then remove the diff cover. After that, you remove the carrier (complete with gears) THEN, you can simply pry out and replace the seal.
If you need help with any part of the job, just ask and I'll give you further info. Axle end nut torque is something like 150lbs, not sure what the carrier end cap torque is.

How do you remove the rear hub nut on a 2004 ford f450 need to get to axle seal


Remove the bolts or nuts at the end of the axle and remove the axle from the axle tube. There will be a little gear lube that will come out that you will need to replace before you use the vehicle again after you replace the wheel seal. That will expose the axle nuts to the axle hub that you will need to remove to replace the inner wheel seal. It's basically very simple once you get the axle out you will see how it all comes apart. Be sure to torque the axle nut and locking nut correctly upon reassembly.

How do i get the rear hub off to change the seal? I have the outer nut and bearing off, cant get inner bearing to come loose.


check to see if you have another nut inside holding the inner bearing inside the axle tube, if so remove it and the bearing, pull the axle and replace the axle seal.

I have a 1986 Chevy Astro-Lite R.V.. The right rear axle is gone out and I need a new one and bearings. The problem is that no one knows what size rear end was put in this, Astro van axle will not fit....


Best thing you can do is bring your axle with you to a scrapyard and match it up. If the bearing surface on the axle you have is no good bit the axle is still in reasonably decent shape, there is a company that makes an off-set bearing that will run on a different area. I can't remember who makes it but any decent parts house will know.

The Pinion Yoke Nut, 9.75" Axle. the torq spec. is 370 Nm. -- 273 Lb ft.

Rear end seal leak


You must be refering to the side seals. common problem. the actual problem with those rear ends is the air breather, which cloggs up and that's when your seals blow out, because the pressure in the rear end has nowhere to go and so your seals get blown out. I just did a set on Monday. Anywho, you will need some specialty tools for this. You will need to remove both rear brake assemblys (rotors, calipers). Than look on the other side of the backing plate, there you will see 4 big nuts that hold the backing plate on the axle tube (rear end). Remove those 4 nuts and that's where specialty tools become usefull. You will need a slide hammer. You need to attach the slide hammer onto the axle right by the studs. Use factory whel nuts to attach. Remove axle out of the housing with few good slides of the slide hammer. Once the axle is out, you need to remove the snapp ring, then cut the colar off and remove colar, then remove the old bearing and thats where the seal is. Big help doing this job is a pneumatic air hammer, which helps you remove the stuff off the axle shaft and the slide hammer to remove the axles out. You will need 2 seals, 2 bearings and 2 collars. You may also need the plates with the studs, which had the big nuts, that you removed in first steps of this repair. Kind of a job for someone that has been working on cars and has the tools to do it. Good luck. Oh ya, change the breather and the fluid in the rear end.

Leak in rear axle


you will need to unbolt the axle and slide it out there should be 6 or 8 bolts on the hub that sticks out of the center of wheel. take this out and there is a spanner nut inside you will need to bend back locking tab and unscreww nut and drum and hub will slide off you will see seal inside hub
