Question about 1989 Volkswagen Jetta 2 Door

5 Answers

1989 VW Jetta - The car is idling a little rough. When 1st started, the tach is very sensitive & erratic, the exhaust blows a little blue. As it warms up, the tach returns to normal, the idle settles down a bit & the blue exhaust gradually worsens. While driving it hesitates & stalls. Once warmed up all the way for about 5 - 10 minutes, it will not start again until I let it sit for at least 20 minutes & sometimes longer. I've changed the fuel filter, tested the fuel pressure, replaced the fuel inj press regulator w/ another used one, a fuel line hose along the pass side wheel well, knock sensor cable. The ground wire to the drivers side of valve cover is quite frayed & bare. Please advise.

It is the 1.8l. The #1 spark plug was severely corroded & # 2-4 showed consistent signs of wear. I cleaned & re-installed all of them. The cap, rotor & wires are all recently replaced & still in like new condition. Cylinders 1 - 3 compression is 150 psi & cylinder 4 is @ 180 - 210. The fuel pressure is 41 psi.
BTW, I need to correct my original info. I didn't change the fuel pressure regulator. It was the IAC. I did this cause I dropped the previous one & broke the plastic housing around the electrical connection. So, the wires would not stay on tight. The fuel hose I replaced was the "s shaped" one to the fuel pressure regulator on the passenger side wall.

thank you for your response ftw. How do you check the EGR valve?

  • Dan Hanes Sep 05, 2010

Thank you for your response ftw. How would you check to see if the EGR valve is open or not?

  • Dan Hanes Sep 06, 2010

That's alright. Some of the best drinking I've ever done was w/ some Britts. Happy Birthday. I'll fill you in a bit later on where I am w/ the car.

So, here's the latest. I got a used replacement air filter housing w/ MAF. Using MAF cleaner, I thoroughly cleaned both of them. Still neither will allow the car to run correctly or now even start at all. I also changed the spark plugs w/ Bosch Super Plus. As stated before, the wires, cap

  • Dan Hanes Sep 07, 2010

    By those fuel injection pressure #'s: .8 bar - 1.2 bar = 11.60psi - 17.40psi

  • Dan Hanes Sep 07, 2010

Now, that's a new thought. I just pulled both sensors from that spot

  • Dan Hanes Sep 07, 2010

I've identified which one is for the gauge

  • Dan Hanes Sep 08, 2010

coolant temp sensor changed = problem not fixed.

please tell me more re: ground cable (earth cable) on top of transmission.

  • Dan Hanes Sep 08, 2010

I am still a bit confused by the bar : psi issue

  • Dan Hanes Sep 08, 2010

Glad to have ya online. I was just driving it about 30 min ago after swapping out for a new sensor. Very bad

  • Dan Hanes Sep 08, 2010

Very bad perf. Still stalling out

  • Dan Hanes Sep 08, 2010

Now, the temp light is coming on.

  • Dan Hanes Sep 08, 2010

sorry for so many comments. They keep getting cut off.

  • Dan Hanes Sep 08, 2010

I only see one switch. It's in good working order. It clicks when pushed.

  • Dan Hanes Sep 08, 2010

    How would I tell?

  • Dan Hanes Sep 08, 2010

I wanna say Digifant / electronic. But not sure.

  • Dan Hanes Sep 08, 2010

Too dark to see. No light available. Either way, what would I be looking for?

  • Dan Hanes Sep 08, 2010

I will be able to check these things tomorrow when I can get a hold of a multimeter.

  • Dan Hanes Sep 08, 2010

would winding #'s outside of those ranges indicate a bad coil?

  • Dan Hanes Sep 08, 2010

digifant / electrical injector connectors / it has a knock sensor (in decent condition) / I don't see an O2 sensor there / eng code - 026 103 737 AA

  • Dan Hanes Sep 09, 2010

You aren't gonna believe this one. The entire problem was the electrical connector to the fuel injectors.

  • Dan Hanes Sep 09, 2010

Somebody had broken 1 wire, repaired it w/ a piece of paperclip

  • Dan Hanes Sep 09, 2010

and then taped it up. We soldered on a new clip

  • Dan Hanes Sep 09, 2010

Now it runs like new. AMAZING.

  • Dan Hanes Sep 09, 2010

Thank you for your help. I will keep the info you shared w/ me.

  • Dan Hanes Sep 09, 2010

BTW, you use words I'm not used to like "sorted"

  • Dan Hanes Sep 09, 2010

Suzman was very knowledgeable & helpful. However, the solution was a simple broken electrical wire @ the connector to the fuel injection. This was due to somebody else's damage & poor repair. Again, Suzman's diagnostic advice will be info I keep on hand for future reference.Thank you.

Check your engine coolant sensor. Problems with the Digifant system as fitted to your engine are mostly because of a bad earth cable on the top of the transmission and the coolant temp sensor. The sensor sits on the coolant flange. Follow your top radiator hose to the engine. Where it connects in the middle of the head on top of that flange is the coolant temp sensor. Replace that and you should be sorted.

The one you're looking for has the blue connecting head. 2 pin connectors.

  • Rene Rossouw
    Rene Rossouw Sep 08, 2010

Mmm. Looks like this one's trying to give you a hard time.
If this ground wire does not make proper contact it fries the ECU. So I doubt ifit's that.
Double check the wiring to the temp sensor. ps your temp sensor should read between 300(hot) to 2000 ohm(cold). Also check the operation and adjustment of the full/closed throttle switches on the throttle body. These are 2 micro switches for signalling throtle position to the ECU

  • Rene Rossouw
    Rene Rossouw Sep 08, 2010

Let's just take a step back. Ineed to confirm which fuel injection you have. Is it CIS(Mechanical injectors) or Digifant(electronic injectors)?

  • Rene Rossouw
    Rene Rossouw Sep 08, 2010

Digifant has electronic injectors ie each injector has 2 wires connected to it.

  • Rene Rossouw
    Rene Rossouw Sep 08, 2010

I'm trying to find a pic of the throttle body so we can make some adjustment. In the meantime, if you have a multimeter disconnect coil and measure primary winding (0.6 to 0.8 ohm between + and - on coil) and secondary winding(6900 to 8500 ohm between + and HT connector) That erratic tach is bothering me. Although it may be unrelated to the real problem.

Please supply the following info :
ECU - Digifant or Digi-jet. Check the LH side of the engine bay in the cowl between windscreen and actual engine bay. You'll have to lift the black plastic cover to see the ECU. It will have its name printed on it.
Injectors - Braided hose connections or electrical connections.
Do you have a knock sensor? - Bolted to the engine block below the no. 2 spark plug
Do you have an O2 sensor? - on exhaust downpipe
Engine code - Stamped on the to front edge of the engine block below the no 3 cylinder.
I'll need this to properly ID what we're working with or else end up chasing our tails for days.

Start the engine. Measure voltage between Battery negative and cylinder head. More than 0.5volt and you have a bad earth. Make sure that the earth cable between engine and bodywork and also battery and bodywork is connected properly. Switch off engine.
    Refer to diagram:

The following is for the Digijet system.(With Digifant pins in brackets)

    1. Measure resistance between ECU connector pin 25(13) and battery negative
and also between pin 7(13) and batt. neg. Both should read 0 ohm. If not -
bad earth or wiring - repair.

    2. Measure resistance on the coolant temp sensor - should be between 150 and 900 ohm depending on engine temp.(210- 120 deg Fahrenheit.) Measure between ECU connector pin 2(6) and 25(10). You should get the same reading.

    3. Measure resistance between pin 4(11) and pin 25(6). Throttle closed - 0 ohm. WOT(wide open throttle) - 0 ohm. Half throttle - no reading. You should get the same readings at the throttle position sensor on the throttle body. Adjust the throttle body cams if faulty. Ask if you dont know how but measure first.

    4. Disconnect the O2 sensor and ground the connector wire. Measure resistance between pin 5(2) and 7(13) - should be 0 ohm.Remove the grounding from O2 sensor wire. Should be no reading. Repair O2 wiring if faulty.

    5. Measure resistance between pin 15(6) and 19(17). 500-1000 ohms. Measuring between pins 7-9 at the airflow meter should give the same reading. Wrong reading at meter is a faulty meter. Wrong reading at ECU is faulty wiring.

    6. Measure resistance between pins 14(6)-15(9). Should be between approx. 900-6500 ohm depending on air temp. The same reading should be had between pins 7 and 22 at the air flow meter.

    7. Measure between pins 18(17) and 19(21). Resistance reading should change as you move the flap in the airflow meter. The same readings should be had at pins 6-9 on the air flow meter.

    8. Last you can check the injectors. Measure between each of pins 12, 11, 24, 23 and pin 7 for cylinders 1,2,3,4 respectively. Each reading should be between 14-18 ohms. (For Digifant measure between pins 12 and 14. Should be 3-5 ohm and then check each injector individually at the head - 14 to 18 ohm)
Please make these measurements and get the readings and previously requested info back to me.

  • Rene Rossouw
    Rene Rossouw Sep 09, 2010

Have you made the measurements? You can skip measurement step 4.

Replace the oxygen sensor, spark plugs, spark plug wires, and dist cap and rotor. Blue smoke indicates an internal oil leak caused by oil blowing by the piston rings or a failure of the valve cover gasket

Hi! It's definitely a MAF (mass air flow) sensor problem. The MAF has big contribution on engine performance specially on the idle and vacuum supply. If the MAF is faulty car may stall in any given time, erratic idling is noticeable too. Once the MAF is replaced you'll be good. Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa!

Check the egr valve if it is opened when the engine is warmed up for then minutes. if not that will stall the engine. the same with the O2 sensor but checking that is with an ohm meter instead

Hi this could be a few different things, i do not think it has anything to do with the fuel system although it sounds like you are getting too much hence the blue smoke , i have tried to narrow it down to 2 or 3 things, first off, IAC idle air control,it is the cylinder shaped unit on the right side of the intake manifold that is twards the back of the eginne bay. it has two hoses coming out of it one that looks like a black oval box check system for any air leaks or blockages, VAF, volume air flow sensor, or the MAF sensor, try getting these things checked out, as it may be 1 or even all of them, i will add i surmised this information on a 2.0ltr 16valve as you did not say what the engine size was, but looking at the information they are all set up with the same sensors but in different places....hope this helps please vote and rate thanks

hi i have just checked the specs for the fuel injection system and it should be on idle, 0,8-1,2 bar with a holding pressure of 0,5 bar which is way lower than what you have said at 41 psi which makes me think that i was correct in saying that it is over fueling, i still think you should get the VAF checked out, have you got any error codes? or engine management light ?, if you have access to a diagnostic system it would be benneficial for you to get the system checked...i do appologise if my spelling is bad ime slightly tipsey as its my birthday lol..

2003 tdi, 54 k miles, bought car new, had manifold cleaned, new glow plugs and harness. car has been driven only short commutes for 3 years. Heavy blue smoke at startup, then it clears right up. No...

valve seals are going. when car sits excess oil gets past the valve seals then when you staRT up it burns the oil off then runs fine and no more blue smoke. It is fine to run like that had the same in a dodge caravan 1996 6cyl. ran another 100 000 km. and still ran fine got rid of it for other reasons.

You can't, the tach from the gas car reads a signal from the ignition system. Your diesel has no ignition system at all, no can do.
