Question about 1990 Volvo 740

2 Answers

1990 Volvo 740GL w/ 435,000 miles - Occasionally the car will not even turn over when in park. Generally, moving the shifter into gear & firmly back into park will allow it to start. Currently, not even that is helping. I am thinking it may be some switch or sensor. Please advise.

Gr8 input Steve. Are you saying that there is either 1 type of switch or the other? Or do you mean that there should be both on my car? I have found

Well, here is the latest. We changed out the entire shifter unit w/ a great find from the wrecking yard. It looks

  • Dan Hanes Sep 07, 2010

Hey, does it look like my comments are cut off? I, personally, cannot see everything I typed.

  • Dan Hanes Sep 08, 2010

the neutral safety switch wasn't the issue at all. I believe it to be the battery cable.

  • Dan Hanes Sep 08, 2010

The 1st 2" of it from the terminal is bare of insulation. It's securely installed @ the starter. Next, we'll try changing it all together.

  • Dan Hanes Sep 08, 2010

The car will start most of the time just fine. Occasionally, it won't even try. Then, all it takes is to jump start it. That'll fire it up immediately.

  • Dan Hanes Sep 11, 2010

No, I have not had the alternator checked. That'll happen this weekend. We will also change the positive battery cable. The car is very slow to start when it does start.

  • Dan Hanes Sep 12, 2010

Surprise. After testing the alternator. It is in fact bad. I think it's reading somewhere near 10. I'm not positive on the number. I wasn't personally there when it got checked. That'll be next on our hit list after changing the positive cable. All grounds are good.

  • Dan Hanes Sep 12, 2010

BTW, I think the messages get cut off only when and where you use the symbol for "and" (shift 7).

  • Dan Hanes Sep 12, 2010

    Gotcha. Thank you.

Hi this sounds like the switch is u/s worn, there are two types of switch, in two different locations, there is a plunger type switch, it has a sprung loaded plunger into a small switch box, or the contact type switch, which as you move the stick it makes contact inside the switch, one is located under the vehicle on the transmission the other is connected to the gear leaver under the centre console, you will have to locate and replace, as by what you say it just has warn out and needs a new one, hope this helps

yes your comments are being cut short, this sounds like you have an outage along the lines, have you checked the alternator to see if that is charging ok? this should read on idle 12 to 12.5 volts when up to 1000rpm it should read, 13.5 to 14 volts, anything lower than that or higher even will meen the alternator may need changing ..

you might also want to check the earth lead to at the same time maybe

hi well at least you have found one major fault, have they tested the battery as well, if the alternator is u/s this could also damage the battery...would be wise to get that checked to..

Hi! It's definitely a neutral safety switch issue. If the neutral safety switch is faulty car may not start but it can when you wiggle the lever a bit and creates contact. Have the neutral safety switch replaced and you'll be good. Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa!

Volvo S40 2004, the key turns on the lights on the dashboard but it doesn't turn any further to turn on the engine. The battery seems fine.

Sounds like it might be fully in park. Move the shifter around a bit then make sure it is fully in either park or neutral.

WHAT CAUSES LOUD GRINDING SOUND WHEN TRYING TO CRANK MY 1990 FORD F150 WHEN IN PARK?

Check and make sure the bell housing on the transmission isn't broke and trying to separate from the engine. Shifter shouldn't move while cranking unless transmission itself is moving.

I am trying to figure out what the orange light bulb means in the dashboard of a 1990 volvo 740gl?

Sorry, I just notice the year & model. If all the lights are working, you could have a bad ground connection or the bulb integrity relay is defective. You will have to get the wiring checked with a test light or volt meter to see where the problem is.

if you open up the hood and look on top of the transmission you will see a gold colored arm connected to a rod or cable this cable or rod probably came dissconnected or broke just rech in with some channel locks and move it possition by turning the gold rod shaft coming out of the transmission. it might not be gold it might be black depending on how dirty the engine is. if you have some one sit in the car and move the shifter you will see what needs to be moved. hope this helps

How do i find TDC when set the timing marks on 1990 volvo 740gl

if you know the firing order of the engine and also the position of the no.1 cylinder you are off to a good start.
Remove the plug on the no.1 cylinder and turn the engine until the piston starts coming up on compression stroke, you can fing out if it is on compression stroke by placing your finger or thumb over the spark plug hole, you will feel the pressure under your thumb or finger as the piston starts to come up the bore.
when you can feel that pressure you can remove your thumb etc and stick a medium size screwdriver into the hole making sure you hold it from falling into the cylinder, rest the end of the driver on top of the piston and turn the engine slowly by hand only, (not by the starter) until the piston has come up to the top of the cylinder, now have a look at the harmonic balancer on the end of the crankshaft, there should be markings on it and one marking will have a "0" with TDC above it, line that mark up with the pointer and that will be top dead center

Cant get my gear shift out of park on my 2003 aztek

turn the key on 1 position from off and attempt to move the shifter if you can move the shifter you have a faulty park lock solenoid (even if u can move the shifter it still more than likely is the park lock solenoid) have it replaced this is a nuisance yes but does not in any way affect the safety and operation of the vehicle

to use it with the faulty part turn key on 1 position move shifter to neutral and start car then move shifter to desired position

Hopefully it's just the clutch, you may have snapped a shaft too. If the engine was just idling, I can't imagine it did too much damage, even with those miles.

www.ipdusa.com sells the correct shop manual for the car. It is only available in the British publication, so you will need to look up metric conversion formulas, which are quite easy. I have this book, so you know.
