Question about Volkswagen Passat

1 Answer

I have a 2003 vw passat 1.8 turbo. I just replaced the tstat and the mechanic told me the car was still overheating and that its most likely the water pump. After leaving the mechanic without fixing the "water pump", I parked it at my house. The car never overheated and the ac worked just fine. Although it seemed fine I still didnt drive it for about 2 weeks and when I went to start it, it seems like I had another problem. The car died, so I took the battery in and they said it was bad. I replaced it with a new one and the car still does the same thing. It starts and then dies if I dont give it gas, and even when I do give it gas, it still wants to die. So it seems like I have 2 problems, do you know what they could be. Appreciate the time

Replacing the ECU on a 1999 VW Passat Sedan 1.8 Turbo

if u have an electronic key than security codes from ur key must be programmed into the ecu to match-- most ecu change overs on cars usually require a trip to the dealer so they can install their programming most auto shops dont have the funds to, or customer base to spend thousands [every auto maker has their own software and update and change every year]-- every year on reprogramming software for ecu-- they may do only 1 or 2 a year

#4 coil needs replacing

here is what i remember ... there was a class action law suit against VW about the high failure rate of the coils especially for the 4 cyl cars with turbo ... VW lost and agreed to install heat shields around the coils ... not sure what years are involved but you might check with a VW dealer to see if you come under that agreement .. as i recall VW charged a fortune for the replacement coils and labor.. a few years ago you could expect a second coil to go bad and even a third or all eventually .. VW would only change one coil at at time when in warranty .... the replacement coil did not appear to be an improved version .. .. it looks like VW is obligated to install the heat shields on models included in the suit ..

Oil usage in 2006 passat 2.0 turbo

I had the same problem with my wife's 2006 passat turbo. We lost 2.5 quarts in 3000 miles and the warning light came on. They put us on a 1000 mile oil test and I lost 1.8 more quarts of oil. They finally agreed to replace the rings. Service tech told me that the factory rings are defective, they begin to lead after about 25,000.
