SOUND LIKE FAULT IN EMISSION EVAP SYSTEM.DEALERSHIP HAS TO RUN A OBD-2 LEAK AND PRESSURE TEST.COULD BE FAULTY FUEL TANK PRESSURE SENSOR OR EVAP CANISTER VENT SOLENOID AND THE EVAP CANISTER PURGE SOLENOID.ANY TIME YOU SMELL STRONG FUEL ODOR IF YOU DONT SEE FUEL LEAKS YOUR EVAP SYSTEM IN FAULT FUEL VAPORS AND PRESSURE BUILDS UP IN FUEL TANK YOUR EVAP CANISTER VENT SOLENOID HOSE COULD BE OFF.DONT DRIVE VECHICLE UNTIL YOU CHECK UNDER THE HOOD ALSO TO MAKE SURE YOU DONT HAVE FUEL LEAKS AT FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR SEAL.AND FUEL LINES TO INJECTORS .GET VECHICLE TO DEALERSHIP QUICK SMELLING FUEL IS DANGEROUS.

Well, the right rear of the car is where the gas cap is, and if you have a faulty gas cap, if the seal of the cap has been torn or if its completely worn down, the gasoline fumes could be escaping through the gas cap, giving you your gas smell. also, its possible that maby a vaccum line on the canister could have slipped off/be cracked.also check your filler neck from the gas cap to the tank maybe you have a little crack or a hose clamp is loose, and check all the hoses to and from the charcoal canister. Check out.Keep updated.Thanks.

Hi! It may not be a leak but I think that the mouth where you fill the fuel is a little loose thats why you can smell the vapor inside the car. Try to tighten the bolts and this may resolve the problem. Can you smell it infront? If yes then the fuel injectors may need replacement for if the seals are worn you can smell the fuel. Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa!

No open TSB's or Recalls at this time but...
I found that more often the concern is actually a result of a defective EVAP system
if the check engine light is not on yet it will be after this test...remove the gas cap and see if this resolves the smell

however, there is no one simple fix for the concern

once I found a clogged charcoal canister
another time it was a clogged vent valve

long story short it will require the use of a professional scanner from the dealer or aftermarket like snap-on modis plus a "smoke machine"

2006 chevy colorado fuel system diagram I need help diagnosing the problem of the gas smell coming from my truck. No leaks...but a very strong gasoline smell...please help me out!

The Chilton/Haynes repair manual we got for our 2004 Trailblazer has a fuel diagram. So I believe the same type manual for your Colorado should be no different as to information. Did find in research that there are plastic parts on the fuel lines that run under the air intake. Over time they become brittle due to engine heat since they are on top of engine but under the plastic air tube and are prone to leak over time. Not hard to fix, just a pain to remove the interfering parts.

My 2005 Chevy Impala smells gasy when ever started and sometimes after idling for awhile.

SMELL GAS YOU NEED CHECK ALL FUEL LINES UNDER THE HOOD IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT.IF GAS IS STRONG UNDER HOOD YOU DONT SEE LEAKING FUEL LINES.YOUR FUEL RAIL FUEL INJECTORS LEAKING OR FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR O - RING OR DIAPHRAM LEAKING GAS.IF FIND NO LEAKS UNDER THE HOOD CHECK FUEL LINES UNDER CAR FROM ENGINE TO FUEL TANK FOR LEAKS.IF ALL IS GOOD YOUR EVAPORATIVE CANISTER SOAKED WITH GAS OR YOUR EMISSION EVAPORATIVE SYSTEM NOT WORKING. DEALERSHIP HAS TO CHECK AND FIX.

It has a very strong gas smell when idling and after you turn it off.

Look under the car to see if you have any gasoline on the ground. If the odor is that strong, I would not recommend driving the car until you find the leak. Try to locate the area of the car were the smell is strongest, rear of the car, center or front under hood.
Carefully check all fuel lines with a flashlight and feel for any wet spots.
Good luck,
Let me know.
