Question about Toyota Avalon

1 Answer

My wife and I just bought a 1995 Toyota Avalon and both rear door child locks keep the doors locked from the inside regardless of which way we turn the knob on the side of the doors. The doors both still open fine from the outside and lock manually and with the switch. Considering the immaculate shape the car was in, it seemed very unusual that both child locks could not be released. Is this possibly some mechanical issue or an electronic reset that I could resolve or should I most likely take it in to the shop? Your help would be most appreciated. Thank you.

It is possible that for "piece of mind "the previous owner had the child locks set on permanent.(door knob disconected)so no matter what they do(bless them)the interior door handles are not working (kids always try to get out when your doing silly speeds on the highway....)so that you know they are put back to normal i would suggest you take it into be done.why not leave it as they are????you then have TOTAL control..even drunk teenagers will try and open the doors.(NOT IN MY CAR)

CAUTION LOCKING WITH REAR DOOR CHILDPROTECTORS Turn the lock knob to the "LOCK" position as shown on the label. This feature allows you to lock a rear door so it can be opened from the outside only, not from inside. We recommend using this feature.... the link is a copy of your owners manual

Right rear child lock is on the door but cant get the door open

Child Locks will stop anyone on the inside of the car from opening the door. If the child lock is on then the door can only be opened from the outside of the car. Of course the main door lock must be off just as any door must be unlocked to be opened from the outside.

Now if you do not want the child door lock to be on then you must first open the door from the outside with the main lock open or unlocked. Look at the space that is covered when the door is closed. There you will see the lever that turns the child lock on or off. Simply move it to the off position.

Good Luck.

The rear passager door handle isn't working from the inside. How do I fix it?

First check that the child safety lock isn't on. There should be a lever near the door latch (on the door, not the door jamb).

Need to open rear doors from inside

open the back door,on the door close to the lock you will see the black plastic round thing. that is the child safety lock, you can turn that left or right for. ( lock or unlock) hope this can help.

Back door wont open.

Are you moving the child safety lock or the door lock? Only the door lock itself should prevent the door from being opened from both inside or out. The child lock is typically a switch on the door near the door pin halfway down the door.
