Question about BMW 318

1 Answer

I have a 1984 BMW 318i with 100,000 miles on the odometer. When driving, when I step on the gas the engine loses power and then it comes back. Sometimes the engine quits at idle or even when I am driving. What are the likely causes of this behavior?

BMW E46 318i Fuel consumption problem it is apparently using 1 mile of fuel every 100 meters. BMW E46 318i

Could be many things, but fuel pressure regulator, leaking injectors are most likely. DO NOT DRIVE UNTIL FIXED. If the fuel is really getting into the oil pan, oil will be diluted and could damage engine bearings.

If their is black smoke from the tail pipe then it's over fueling. First check is the air filter if it's o.k. then get the fuel system checked. You should be getting 30 to 35 mpg but if you have a bodykit and wide wheels fitted depending on the type of kit and wheel's it can take up to 10 mpg more to run it. If it has a lot of mile's on it and no service history the engine and injection system may be worn leaving it with less power ond more fuel. Your mecanic will do a compresion test for you which check's ware in your engine. As for the oil problem sorry I can't advise as I don't know where you see the oil but after washing it should be easily seen unless it is comming from behind a casing or someone may have spilled a bit when changing or topping up.

Odometer reading

I laugh at those Odometers. The funny thing is I think FORD never believed the truck would last longer than 100,000 miles. It just rolls over and starts a zero again.
With a truck that age, it must be 285,000
But, you have a better clue if it's at 185,000 or 285,000 by going over the smog records at the DMV.
