Question about 1993 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera

1 Answer

While driving the car it started acting funny so I put transmission fluid in it. Then drove about 5-10 miles and it started again, I put more transmission fluid in and then drove again. Then it wouldnt drive. I let it sit for 20 mins and it drove two miles. Then nothing. So I let it sit again for 15 mins and it drove again but eventally wouldnt go anymore.? Does this sound like a clogged filter to my transmission if not what could it be?

Depending on the miles the transmission fluid most likely needs flushed and changed.

There is a way to check every transmissions fluids

If you have been driving it while acting funny,do not
be surprised that you may have ruined the trans, only
takes a few miles of slipping & not shifting correctly

You provided no vehicle or trans model

It could be 20 years old & 200,000 miles on it for all we know

Hey Anon, Yes, drive it to the tranny shop..plan to leave it... sounds like you are in for a rebuild.. this is typical for GM RWD transmissions.. I have seen TOO many do this same thing,, (I have had TWO in for this... vehicles I inherited that were not maintained)..GM transmissions on RWD's must have the fluid and filter changed every 50K - 75K and a complete fluid exchange and filter replacement every 120K -150K MINIMUM for them to last..usually cost around $1200 - $1400.. sorry.. Good luck!

Not to sound condescending, but have you checked to see if you are low on transmission fluid?

it sounds as if the transmission might be slipping. Check the fluid level and condition. If the color is not a strong red color and more of a brown or black color, then you will need to replace the transmission. A fluid change at this point will not help you. good luck!

Double check your trany fluid with the engine HOT and idling in park, top off if needed, otherwise if you disconnected the battery the transmission will have to teach itself to shift all over again which should only take a mile or two to accomplish on it's own, if not the tranny is history.

I just replaced my tranny. It was working great

About 3 months ago, during my 25-mile commute to the ambulance base where I volunteer, my transmission started acting up. After a few minutes of driving normally, it started to upshift very hard. Each upshift was accompanied by a noticeable "Bang!" and it felt like the car was hitting a pot hole.

I immediately stopped and checked the tranny fluid at a service station, but the fluid level was fine and it didn't have any burnt smell. The car has 76K miles on it and the transmission fluid was changed at 50K per the maintenance schedule. I had no choice but to continue on to the base, driving very gently.

I made a stop about 5 minutes before arriving, to pick up dry cleaning. I was in the cleaners for about 8 minutes, and when I came out the hard shifting had completely disappeared. The car drove smoothly for the next 3 months.

Now, this problem seems to recur any time I drive the car even remotely hard. We're not talking about full-throttle accelerations here, since my everyday driving stays below 2500 RPM to save on gas. But if I'm in a hurry and start driving a touch harder - crossing over 3500 RPM - then the tranny will start shifting hard within minutes. Let it sit for 10 minutes with the engine off, and the problem is gone again
