Question about 1995 Ford Econoline

When I drive it pulls to the right.Its not a tie rod or the tire.Ive tried the air pressure,checking tie rods and changing the wheels around. What else can be done? Thank you, Ethan

It could be a sticky brake caliper or a brake line causing it to pull.

Moving steering wheel left or right causes a clonking noise - Could it be drive shafts?


Most likely the problem is either the tie rid ends or the ball joints, my opion is not drive the car until fixed, I have had both break while I was driving and not something to experience, luckly both my issues were at low speeds.To check a ball joint problem jack the car so the wheel spins freely, take both your hands and place one on top of tire an the other on the bottom of the tire and wiggle the tire ,make sure you try to move the wheel towards you NOT side to side (up and down) if any mmovement then it is the ball joint.
The tie rod is a little more work how I check is to disconneck the tie rod which consist of remove the cotter key from the bottom of the nut holging the tie rod unscrew the nut pop the tie rod out of the socket and check for mobement if there is movement then tie rod must be replaced, warning any time you replace a tie rod you must then get the car allined.

You need to raise the front tires of the ground and check for loose front end parts. Grab the tires at the 3 and 6 o'clock position and push/pull. If you feel any play you have worn outer tie rods, inner tie rodes, ball joints or wheel bearings ( if there really bad). If you don't feel anything loose check your tire pressure. The tires should be inflated to around 30-35 psi.

Tie rods on front wheels need replacing, also need 2 new front tires. Can I have the front tires installed and then put the new tie rods on at home?


Depends on how far your drive is to home, if the tie rods are that bad to make the tires wear then i would only drive it a short distance. Tie rods control inward and outward positions of tire if looking at front of vehicle called (Toe) . When driving strat and a tie rod is damaged or defective and tires ares point in or out all your doing is dragging the tire down the road.

The passenger front tire of my Chrysler 300m wobbles every time I hit a hard bump. Tie Rod maybe? I was told that the Tie Rod on that side was wore when I had new tires put on so that was my guess.


could be tie rod or ball joint or bushing. I would put it on a rack and pull at every joint. You can even check at home by jacking up the wheel and pulling it in each direction. There should not be any play. In/out play at side of wheel is due to tie rods or bushings. In/out play at bottom is due to ball joint.

Steering wheel shimmy at highway speeds


This sounds like tie rod ends are going out. Before you remove the old ones, mark on the threads where it currently is seated or you will throw it out of alingment when you put new ones on. You may need to borrow or buy the tool for poping out the tie rod end. They aren't a big deal to change if you have some basic tools and sometimes you don't need the wedge tool either. Once you get the old one out, try moving it around. If it is real loose and moves easily, thats your problem. But the swaying you are describing sound like this is the problem. Could be you steering control arms as well but because the inside of the tires are worn I doubt it.

REPLACING LEFT TIE RODS


Genreally speaking the outter tie rod is only worn. The inner connection to the rack is more of a coupling than a rod end. You will need a 22 mm openend wrench and probally a 16mm and a 18mm opened wrench. A set of pliers to remove the old and bend the new cotterpin. Remove wheel cover and loosen the wheel nuts. Jack up the car and place jack stand or wood blocking, (or as a minimum place the wheel you removed) under the car to prevent the car from falling on you while it's in the air. Do not rely on the jack to keep the car up. Cars are heavy. remove wheel Loosen jam nut that locks the tie rod end to the connecting rod of the steering rack, spray adjustment treads with penetetrating oil to help it spin free. You may have to lock the adjustable shaft by the placing wrench on the hex portion of the shaft just inwards of the tread. Remove the cotter pin from the tie rod end. Remove nut. Take hammer and drive the tie rod from the steering knuckle. To help with the alignment of the front wheel try not to move the the steering knucle brake assembly. Unscrew the tie rod , lubricate the tread and in stall the new one. adjust the treads so that the tie rod slides back into the steering knuckle without turning the knuckle. Install the tie rod nut, tighten and secure with new cotterpin. Do not tightnen the jam nut that locks the tie rod nut to the inner adjustment rod for the steering rack, instead place the wheel back on the car, lower car and finish tightnen. with the car lowered, position the car steering wheel straight. Look at right side wheel. You should be able to line the the edges of the front wheel with your eye's with the outside edge of the rear wheel. if this doesn't line up check steering wheel postion. Now after seeing what the wheel alaignment looks like on the right side, go to the left side. If you look along the outside of the left ire and you see the tread of the rear tire , you have to muckh toe out. Lenghten the adjustmne t rod by turning it clockwise. If when you look along the edge of the tire and you don't see the rear tire, turn the rod counter clockwise. Adjust slowly and always check that the steering wheel is in the straight position. Once you have it fairly close to straight, lock the jam nut on the tie rod and take to a wheel alignment company for finishing adjustment. Good luck.

may be frozen brake caliper i would first jack up right side and spin wheel if it is hard to turn u have brake problem if it spins freely u may need tie rod end or ball joint u can check for play when jacked up simpley tug back and forth on wheel side to side 4 tie rod and up and down 4 ball joint could also be bad tire or tire pressure check pressure should be 32psi

Check tire condition and pressure it sounds simple but could make a world of difference.
