Question about 1987 Buick Regal

2 Answers

I am replacing the multifunction swith in the steering column of my 1987 Buick Regal. I have everything apart except the lower part of the steering column cover. It is attached in some way. How do I get that off so that I can get the wiring harness to pull up from under the dash?

I am replacing the mulifunction turn signal, high beam, wiper switch inside of the steering coulmn on a 1987 Buick Regal Turbo T. I have removed the steering wheel, turn signal cam and the ignition lock. I have removed 3 torx screw that holds the part of the steering column with the lock in it. I have even removed the multifunction switch, but I need to pull the wiring harness up through the remaining steering column cover that is apparently still attached. There are 2 male torx screws at the bottom inside of the steering column under the top steering shaft bearing. If I remove those can I pull the remaining cover off? Or, what is the best way to get the wiring harness up through the inside of the steering column cover. The problem is the connector at the end under that dash. it's too big to just pull up through the steering column. Thanks

1) To remove the bottom steering column cover. Use the appropriate sized male torx bit on the middle back screw and also remove the 2 other screws on each side. The cover has plastic loops where it attaches to the dash so you must move it towards the dash and then down to release it.
2)
to remove the top steering column cover. First you'll need to remove the tilt steering lever though. Using a flashlight, look into where the lever attaches to the steering column. You will see a metal tab that you can push on to release the tilt lever and pull it out. Now you can take off the top steering column cover.
3) Looking up from underneath you will see 2 male torx screws holding it on. One on each side of the steering wheel. You can use either needle nose pliers to remove these if you don't have female torx screw bits. Once these are removed, use a pair of tin snips to cut the plastic just below the key lock or you won't be able to get the cover up and around the key lock. Now carefully spread that part of the cover up and around the key lock while pushing back towards the dash with the cover. It should release and come off. Thanks. Keep updated for any more query. Replacing turn signal switch 2002 regal

GM multi-function switches (the switch on the steering column) are VERY involved to replace (unlike Dodge and Ford)! in most cases, you have to tear half the steering column apart to gain access to its mounts. You are better off taking the car to a mechanic if that is the case.

2000 Buick Regal do you have to remove steering wheel and air bag to replace a mutifuction turn signal w/cruise or just the plastic column covers?

You do have to remove the air bag and steering wheel to replace the multifunction switch. You also have to remove the lock plate which locks the steering when the key is removed. this takes a special tool a ( lock plate remover / installer ) the lock plate is held in place by a small retaining ring , but the plate has a very stiff spring under it making it just about impossible to remove with out the tool, and if you get Lucky enough to get in apart i cane assure you you wont be able to get it back togeather with out the tool. If you have a friend who is a gm tech i am sure he will loan it to you or you can buy one for about 10.00 to 15.00 dollars at any auto parts store ..PS please be careful with the air bag just disconnecting the battery is not enough they also have a separate power supply unplug the yellow connector a the base of the steering column befor doing any work...Iknow this sounds like a lot but if you take your time and have the right tool i am sure you will do just fine Good Luck

The turn signals in my 1993 Buick Regal work, but i have to hold them a certain way to keep them on. How would i fix that?

You would have to replace the multifunction switch on the driver side of the steering column. It is not real expensive and if you are handy it is not a real hard job. The multifunction switch does all the directional wiper and headlight controls. The cruise is wired into the handle, but goes down the column. That handle jsut pulls straight out of the multifunction switch.
