Hi! Few things to look at... The neutral safety switch is surely faulty which needs replacement for it will not shift out of park. Regarding the steering wheel issue, please check the fluids if they are in the right level or look for leaks. If everything seems to be fine then the problem will be on the power steering pump, this will surely need replacement. Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa!

Something is going on with the ignition switch. I know that when the key is not on, the car will not go in gear. So I would say that the rod that goes down to unlock the steering wheel also unlocks the shifter. And the steering wheel turning and not the wheels also has to do with this not unlocking. I had a 1990 corvette. It is in your ignition switch. You might try to disconnect the battery and turn the key to the start position and see if it unlocks the transmission. I would say maybe the rod inside the steering column bent or fell out. If it is bent when you turn the key to start you should be able to put the car in gear.

The paddle-shift option of the automatic transmission literally lets you shift gears with your fingertips. There is no need to grasp the gear shifter and push it into gear. All you do is grasp the little paddle that's attached to the back of the steering spoke on the right, if you want to shift up. To shift down, grasp the paddle on the left. Both can be maneuvered with just your fingertips. If its not working then the transmission is got blocked. Its not letting the wheels to move and not letting the gears to run freely. Also check the transmission fluid.Change the fluid and recheck. Check out.keep updated.Thanks.

If there is no pedal then check out this possibilities for the problem. In older cars there was no pedal as noticed.

    ----------

When the Automatic transmission gear shift is not working this is
a very serious problem that causes by several reasons and one of those is
completely damage transmission. It may also possible that the transmission has
    a very low amount of
transmission fluid. However, if the fluid level is enough, another reason is Bad
fluid pump or Gear selector linkage problem.

    When an
automatic transmission has bad fluid pump all the gears will not work, because
automatic transmission depends on the hydraulic fluid pressure that is created
by the fluid pump to pump transmission fluid throughout the transmission
    assembly to work properly.

    Same with the fluid
pump, when an automatic transmission has a problem on gear selector
linkage all gears will not work. Gear selector is the one that determines which
gear is going to operate. When a gear selector linkage is broken or out of
adjustment it cannot operate properly causing the gear not to work.

    Diagnose auto problem:
Low transmission fluid, Faulty fluid pump or out of adjustments gear selector
    linkage.

     When the problem is
low level automatic transmission fluid, just ad enough amount pf fluid to fixed
the problem. But if the problem has nothing to do with the fluid level .Then inspect
the fluid pump and the gear selector linkage, the mechanic probably will open
up the transmission for better diagnosis. If the problem is not fluid pump or
gear selector linkage then you has no other option but to replace the
transmission assembly with a new one since the
     automatic
    transmission gear shift
     is not working.

Thanks for keeping updated with your query.

1987 corvette electric rear window release wiring diagram

You need to check using a multimeter on the solenoid for the operating voltage when the relay clicks on activating. If there is voltage then the solenoid is faulty and if not the relay contact points have burnt out and so does not give the connection for switching the voltage. In either case get yourself a multimeter or a 12 volt park lamp bulb to check the voltage on the solenoid.

1987 corvette starts and runs smooth. 5 to 10 seconds later it shuts down like the key was turned off. Alt. tested and was bad. Replaced alt. Battery tested. Failed test and replaced it. Still quits...

This sounds like you may have an ignition module failing. Run it and when it dies, have some one crank it while you check for spark. If no spark is found, replace the ignition module. This piece runs about $75. Not too bad relatively. Let me know what you find.

1987 VW Jetta won't start. Starts occasionally when you jiggle the gear shift. Replaced the contact bridge and soon will be replacing neutral safety switch. If this doesn't get it started, what should I do...

I have an 87 Jetta also. The problem is basically that the electrical wiring throughout the car is getting brittle and the wires rub against metal and other items on the frames (sometimes sharp edges are involved. Once moisture gets under the wire insulation, the braided wiring begins to corrode and resistance to current flow increases over time. This has effected everything from the radio to the headlights in my car. Starting the car with the ignition switch got more and more difficult.
Then, I simply got a starter button from autozone (about 15 bucks), wired it with new 10 gauge wire directly to the starter and the battery and mounted the switch on the left side of the steering wheel on the dash (eerily there is a perfect mounting place for it). For the last 4 or 5 years, I just turn the key to the on position and push the starter button and it cranks reliably every time. Some day when I get time, I will run a new hot wire from the battery to the main fuse block under the dashboard. In the meantime, the car starts and runs great.

As weird as this sounds, take off the alternator and take it in for testing. Sounds like it is leaking AC into your electrical system. If this is help, please post as so. If it is so, please post as fixya. TY
