This area does not come apart without a key, even so, not very apart. Usually, you replace the whole thing...easier, but might need a locksmith to get the old one out, without a key..

The key to my 2001 lincoln ls that opens the trunk and starts the car broke in half will it still start the ignition

How you gonna turn key if half is broken in switch? Go to dealer with your vin number and proof of ownership and get another key.

And remove the broken piece so you can insert the new key.

Nnthe key broke off inside the ignition and am trying to figure out how to remove the broken piece from inside the ignition since i have another key

If the broken piece of key is not sticking out of the ignition lock, unlikely you will be able to remove
it. Because its probably one solid broken piece and its bent so it wont slide right out.

But try getting a strong magnet, and put your spare key in until it touches the broken piece of
key in the ignition. Stick the magnet on the spare key and see if you can pull the broken piece out.

If you have an old speaker thats not working, there will be a strong magnet on the back of the
speaker. Or use a magnetic pickup tool for picking up screws, sockets and stuff under the hood of
your car. You can get a magnetic pickup tool from an auto parts store.

If you cant get the broken piece out you will need to replace the ignition lock. Not easy on
a Cadillac, probably has the telescoping/ tilt steering wheel.

Key will not go in ignition

Wrong key?.....ha. No, sounds like the tumblers inside the ignition have "fallen". Try lifting the small pieces of metal inside the ignition with a paperclip or something similar. If you can move any of the pieces inside then you need an ignition. You may even be able to insert the key with the piece lifted. "very delicate".

Key no longer works in ignition. I stopped to gas up and the key I normally use would not open the gas cap door. I re-entered the car and the key would not turn the ignition. The key unlocks the steering...

take it to a lock smith to remove the broken part or you could jam the broken part down to where the ignition will turn with the broken key. I advise taking it to a lock smith to remove the broken part

I broke the key off in the ignition, how do I remove it so i can install a new key way

Hi dwayne,

My personal favorite tool for removing broken keys are the small round files used for cleaning out the holes in the heads of cutting torches.

They are small enough to get in next to the key.
They are abrasive enough to pull th piece back out with it.

They work extremely well for this.

1990 chevy suburban. The key was turned to auxillary and stuck

hopefully that does not have tilt steering which makes the job somewhat more difficult. the same thing happened with a van i owned. there are small arms inside the steering column that move with the key to move the ignition switch.
to confirm it is broken locate the ignition switch on the column. remove it then turn the key. if the piece that normally moves that switch doesn't... than it is broken.

first unhook the battery.

about the only way to get at it is to remove the steering wheel. there are more parts behind that that have to be removed. then you will get to what is basically and end cap. remove that and slide out the parts and install the new arm(s) mine was a 2 piece.

basically you just need to bolt it back up and reinstall the key cylinder and you are good to go. hook up the battery again and you should have a working vehicle.
the tilt springs can be held together with a c clamp. it is tricky but you will see as you attempt it.

Key broke off in ignition removed key now steering wheel is locked. I can start the car with screw driver but that's it. gears move

You need to replace the key switch. It has a pawl in it that unlocks the lever that holds the steering wheel in lock position.

A key broke off in ignition

TRY SOME SUPERGLUE ON THE REST OF THE KEY AND CAREFULLY PLACE IT ON THE BROKEN SEGMENT, INSIDE THE CYLINDER. IF YOU ARE NOT COMFORTABLE WITH THIS IDEA, THEN TRY TO USE A PIECE OF STRONG TAPE TO EXTRACT THE BROKEN PIECE. IF YOU DO USE THE SUPERGLUE METHOD, THEN OIL THE OUTSIDE OF THE CYLINDER SO THE GLUE WON'T STICK TO IT. PUT A VERY VERY SMALL AMOUNT OF GLUE ON THE KEY AND INSERT IT SO IT ONLY TOUCHES THE KEY. HOPE THIS METHOD WORKS WELL FOR YOU. KEEP ME POSTED. THANK YOU FOR USING FIX-YA. AND THANKS FOR AN HONEST RATING AS WELL. GOOD LUCK.

Key wont turn

no it sounds like the ignition clinder is broken or worn down inside either that or maybe the key itself. get a new key made (local hardware store) and try that one if that doesnt work im afraid that you may need a new key and tumbler
