That might happen if you replaced your own car battery. The new battery voltage has to be regulated to the cars electronics when putting in a new battery. BMW says there the only ones that can do it and it cost 700 for battery and install. Otherwise the sensitive electronics in the car go bye, bye then its major money to fix.

On my BMW 318i convertible the battery went flat, myself and a couple of mates pushed the car to get it started, after a couple of attempts we got it started but it was spluttering, backfiring,...

Your alternator might be shot and is no longer charging the battery or running the computers, etc.. If you can borrow a good battery, try it on your BMW. If the car runs better, then I'd say it's your alternator. Of course, you might need a new battery too.

My 2006 BMW convertible top wont re tract. the yellow light comes on and nothing. the manual doesnt say want to do to fix...?

The convertible top is controlled by the Convertible Top Module (CVM II). This module contains the processing, controlling and monitoring electronics for the complete top operation.
The CVM II communicates with the General Module over the K-BUS for operation of the top storage cover and windows. The CVM II is fully diagnosable and contains fault memory for storage of monitored faults. Diagnosis is carried out over the K-BUS with the DIS or the MoDIC.
To put all of that "technical jargon" into plain English, If your convertible top is malfunctioning, you must BEGIN diagnosis by scanning your onboard computer network with the proper equipment.

I have a 1999 323i bmw and the convertable top doesnt work the light is blinking and i dont know how to check if the motors work what wires do i hook it up to and how can i test everything else

i had the same problem with my 1998 bmw 323i and right under the back drivers seat there is an emergency convertible top lever with a orange tip on it. i removed my back seat to make it easier. when you pull that lever, you will hear a bang sound. that is the sound of the motors disengaging.(there are 3 top motors in the trunk by the left side panel when you remove it) you will then have full access of movement to either put the top up or down. But before you do any of this, i Really suggest you watch this youtube video. if this link doesnt work, you can go to and type in bmw convertible top motor stuck and click on the first link BMW DIY #3 E36 Top Repair. I suggest watching the whole video first before attempting or if you want, you can have a mechanic do it! hope this helps

Hello. In order to access that trip computer you have to get at it from underneath. Most times, you have to pull the dash part-way out to be able to work on it. Any auto body shop can assist you in doing this. Offer them a few dollars for ten minutes of their time. Joe

No reverse lights on bmw e39, no indicator lights on dash board

This is caused by a fault in your IKE (Instrument Cluster Electronics) module. Has someone attached a scanner to it recently ? Some cheap scanners corrupt the programming of the IKE module. You might be able to use the hidden menu to reset the dash but experience shows it will probably be an expensive trip to BMW to either reprogramme the existing dash or replace the module. If you need help on getting into the hidden menu, try this link
