Question about 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Open Question

The OD Off and Trans Over Temp lights both keep coming on in my 2002 Grand Cherokee. I am also getting two codes: P 0711 and P 0713. After looking those up, it seems that there may be a problem with my transmission temperature sensor. I guess my question is, where is that sensor located? I would love to fix it myself if I could.

Likely you have a shift control module malfunction. Module is probably on the right side fender in the engine compartment. Check to see if you have one (some do and some dont... go figure...I've got a 91 & 95... I have about five different diagrams and NONE apply to my vehicles)

The governor pressure sensor is the most likley cause however an inspection of fluid or debris in trans pan would be a good idea to make sure there's nothing excessive in it. Attached is a list of possible causes however the senor would be the most common.

POSSIBLE CAUSES

  • Powertrain control module
  • 5 volt supply circuit open
  • Check transmission fluid level and condition
  • GOV press sensor signal circuit shorted to voltage
  • GOV press sensor signal circuit shorted to sensor ground
  • GOV press sensor signal circuit shorted to ground

Run fault codes and look for a servo/sensor fault in the od section of the box. If the od band/clutch is slipping it will cause the oil to over heat. Have a pressure test done on the box to ensure proper operating pressure. Check for correct oil level in the gear box.

I would want to know what the code is first. You may have to go to an independent garage for help. Auto parts stores can scan the ECM but not always the body computer.

02 Jeep Grand Cherokee jumps out of overdrive while driving on highway.

The torque converter is where OD takes place. Look at your transmission fluid cooler to see if it's blocked. The TCM module controls the OD functions so it may not be sending the correct signals.

OD turns off Trans Temp light comes on

forums cant fix tranmissions
nor diagnose them.
its like 1000 page book,
why not buy a book on transmissions first. the see why it takes
special testing.
your trans shop is a crook.

why not buy a scan tool (way cheaper than $3000 by 10 to 1)
then scan it when it fails
make sure engine does not overheat or trans.
make sure no Px7xx codes. (trans codes)
that is what you skipped, and the crook too, then you go broke.

Overdrive cuts off buy itself while driving

when the transmission overheat light (this is for the fluid) comes on the transmission control module pulls the trans out of OD to try and cool it down, this is called failure mode strategy, it is built into the programming of the control module, the signal from the trans is most likely incorrect, but the module doesn't know that, replace the transmission fluid temperature sensor.
