Yes, or head gasket. Try replacing thermostat first. make sure you refill and bleed the system after replacing. Hondas have to be bled to get air out of coolant passages. there are 1-2 bleed nuts around the various hoses.

How do you burp the cooling system replaced t stat and water pump still over heats

Start the engine with the radiator cap off. When the thermostat opens the water level will drop. Keep adding water slowly till it takes no more water and then cap to pressurize. Also fill the excess tank to recommended level marking on side of tank.

The water is not hot at all but the radiator is shooting the water out of the cap, and sending the water to the resivore and makes the resivore over flow.

Sounds like you may have a bad radiator. It may be clogged and the coolant is not able to go through it causing it to come out the cap and reserve tank.

I have an 1995 VW Cabrio 2.0 ABA motor. It all started one night the water pump went out, I pulled over but dont know if I caught it in time or not. Got it home kept getting bubbels in the resivor after...

when you replaced head gasket did you check the head and block for cracks???
my best guess is you have a cracked head or block
is there oil in the coolant?
is there water in the oil?
is there white smoke coming out the tail pipe?
is it still boiling over?

double check to make sure all timing marks line up (although dont think this is your problem usually if timing car wont run at all or will run poorly)
do you have a check engine light on? if yes have your codes scanned
disconnect the catalytic converter and see if runs better yes car will be loud but if it runs better/longer you know converter bad

Fully overheats after 5 minutes of driving? water is leaking somewhere also

Check your therma stat, it is located at the end of the radiator hose on the engine under the piece the hose attaches to. While running check the hose to see if its hard(under pressure) if so the thermastat is stuck. its only 3 bolts and a hose clamp you have to remove to get to the thermastat. Purchase a new one with a gasket a sealer. then replace it.

How easy is it to change the thermastat

it is very easy, just flow you hose to your water pump remove to bolts and replace the gasket clean while before placeng the new one put new therma in and make sure that the gasket doen't slip when putting it on or it will leak, replace bolts takeing turns with bolts try to get them on the same amount of turns so your gasket doesn't slip them start the car to see if it is leaking them check your fluid level. to replace what you lost.

Put in a new water pump and thermas stat and the gage still goes to hot

Do you have access to a non contact laser temp gauge?
If so shoot the thermostat housing and see if the gauge is correct.

If the gauge is off from the laser then replace the engine coolant temp sensor,
If the gauge is correct then double check the thermostat installation,is it in backwards? or maybe you got a bad thermostat.

did you flush the entire system when you replaced water pump?
