I was driving my '94 Mercury Tracer 1.9 when it suddenly died, like it ran out of gas or something, and it just will not start up. Any ideas on what could be the problem? We have changed the water pump and...

Sudden no starts are usually gas or spark (ignition) related. If you spray some starting fluid into the intake and it fires up briefly, then you know it is a fuel problem- a bad fuel pump, or less often a fault in the fuel injection circuit.

If the engine doesn't respond to the starting fluid, check for spark on a spark plug wire with the engine cranking. Purchase a cheap spark tester at a parts store. It's easy to check for spark this way, and no chance of getting a shock. Another way is to pull off a wire from a plug, take out the spark plug and reattach to the plug wire. Lay the spark plug on a metal piece of engine, where the plug threads are touching metal. That grounds the plug. Now have your helper be cranking the engine over while you watch for a strong blue spark at the spark plug tip. If you have a blue spark consistently, you can assume the ignition is working properly.
Post back with what you find or for more help.

I have a 98 mercury tracer the car starts and then turns off but before it turns off it makes a loud ticking noise very loud! and i dont know what it is any help?

It sounds like it could be a broken rod. It's also possible that a valve has stuck open and is being hit by a piston. What you need to do now, is to take the spark plugs out and do a compression check. You may also see damage on one spark plug, which will tell you whether or not to even bother proceeding with the compression check.. If there is metal all over one spark plug, you have some serious damage.

98 merc tracer wont turn over....please helpme...

when tracers stop out of the blue like this, it can be a number of things. #1 is fuel pump failure or pump relay, or fuse. check to see if there is perssure at fule rail. check fule pressure regulator. #2 is ignition coil failure, or no spark. check plug wire from coil for spark. that will get you going in right direction. good luck.
