SOURCE: 97 mx-6 egr valve problem
You have to jack the car up, put it on jack stands crawl under. The EGR will be near the fire wall and very hard to reach. It's close the rear motor mount. It is situated next to the rear exhaust manifold on the block, the side closer to the driver. Hope that helps. visit mx6.com for more help

SOURCE: EGR valve erroe code P0401
Depending on what size engine you have, it's either down on the back side of the engine by firewall, ( you have to take intake breather off to get at it) or by or below the battery. Some of these cars don't have one, depending on the engine.

You can try cleaning the EGR valve and passages with Seafoam. A bottle costs just a few dollars at any auto parts store or discount store. With the engine running, squirt/spray it in through the brake booster hose, or through the PCV hose. This will cause smoke to come out the exhaust. This is normal and will disappear after a few minutes. If Seafoam does not do the trick, then you can still disassemble the EGR valve from the throttle body and clean it with throttle body cleaner.
