Starter or solenoid. Both come off at same time. Take them apart, and you can troubleshoot which one is bad, or can just replace both. If you hotwire 12 volts to starter and it turns, then starter is good (replace solenoid). If no turn, starter is bad.

Clicking noise from under hood before it turns over. sometimes won't start, but will start when jumped. battery is good.

battery may not be good have it load tested --also alternator and starter tested---clicking would be starter solenoid trying to get starter to turn over ---check the connections at battery and starter for loose or corrosion

Clicking sound when trying to start

Is the battery charged up? It should be at least 12.6 volts.
If you have a voltmeter, do a voltage drop test on the battery cables, posts, terminals-looking for high resistance in passing current to the starter. Bad cables or terminals if you have high resistance. Youtube has videos of voltage drop testing.
If you don't have a voltmeter, take the starter off and have a parts store test it for free. If starter and battery are good, check for power on the small purple wire at the starter solenoid with key held in crank. If power there, and starter and solenoid were tested, then could be the battery ground, or a bad battery cable, a loose connection on the starter, or starter not bolted down tight. Maybe the starter and solenoid tested okay, but still not good. That's rare but not unknown.
If no power on the small purple wire in start, check the starter relay-is that what clicks? Try a new relay.
Good luck, half the time it's the starter, the other half is one of the above. If the click is at the starter, you can assume that the start circuit is good-look to the battery, cables, starter, or a loose, poor ground or cable connection.

Have you checked to see if you can turn the crank with a wrench ?
And are the cables good from the battery to the starter ?

1991 toyota truck relay clicks no starts

check battery cable connections. Dirty/corroded wil cause that condition. Headlights bright?
try starter with headlights on.If clicks and they dim slightly, have a friend TAP the starter with the key in the START position.
USE a long length of re bar or metal rod. Tap on the starter motor, like a pool cue. If the starter cranks on the first "tap",the starter should be replaced.
There are brushes inside the electric starter motor and when they get burned/worn,a slight tap jars the starter motor brushes just enough to make good contact.

Starter clicking

you may want to check the battery voltage with meter it should be no less than 12.6 volts.then perform an amp load test on the battery to see if the battery is no good.if this checks out then my next question would be did you install a new or used starter.if used it may not be a good one.if the starter is clicking try tapping the starter with someone trying to start it if it starts the starter is no good,it has an internal also could be loosing voltage while trying to start the car which will have to be checked with a should have battery voltage on both terminals of the starter.if not you will have to check connections at both ends of the wiring for the starter.

When i try starting the car it does a clicking sound and i keep trying till it strartes ,, would that sound like the starter going or not ?

hi the clicking sound is probably the solenoid switch on your starter motor not fully actuating
this can be because it is worn or because there isnt enough battery power to open the switch
check the condition of your battery and all conections to it and the starter motor clean off any corrosion with abrasive paper to ensure a good connection if the battery is in good condition
and the connections are good you need to get a new starter motor or find someone who can recondition your old one

Battery good, wont turn over, just a click when try to start

it is most likley starter relay or starter.with vehicle in park and e-brake on have someone tap on the starter with hammer while your trying to start.if starter starts to crank then you know the starter is on the way out.if starter does not crank it may already be shot.srarter relay is on fire wall check power + ground.
