It is on the rear of the engine area before the transmission. It has two or tree bolts that attach it to the engine or fly wheel area.

Take care.

1996 manual jetta won't start. It won't even crank. There is a whinning noise when I turn the key from the engine but that's it.

Sounds like the starter drive is not fully engaging with the fly wheel... might try to tap firmly on the body of the starter while you turn the key but be careful not to hit the wires... Might get you going enough to get to a garage and have it checked. good luck!

1996 Volkswagen Jetta....not getting power to the solenoid for starter. Ran test on starter & solenoid and they are ok. No power to connection at solenoid. Think is may be a fuse or neutral safety...

There is usually a fuse between the wire that connects the battery and the starter. Follow the wire from the battery towards the starter and you should locate the fuse.

The positive cable should go to the starter solenoid, to the same post that the alternator connects to.

1996 VW Jetta wont start

Check to see if it's getting gas or spray some starter fluid into intake. If it fires, change fuel filter first and try it without starter fluid. If it doesn't start then change fuel pump.

New battery & still won't start. Won't even make a noise. DEAD!

sounds like you have a problem with either the ignition switch itself or the solenoid on the starter if you jump positive power to the small wire on your starter and it turns the starter then it would be your ignition switch if it does not turn it replace your starter
