I own a 2000 Alero and for the past 2 weeks it has been stalling at the stop lights but runs fine on the highway. The service engine light has come on. Is it safe to run for antoher day until I get it

Hello
When the service engine soon light (Also called the check engine light or engine management light) is turned on this is to alert you to the fact that Powertrain Control Module (computer) has detected a failure somewhere in the systems it controls you may not feel any difference in the way the engine runs, this can be the transmission or the engine or emission system, there are fault codes set in the modules memory for these faults. What needs to happen now is to have the powertrain control module scanned with a special tool called an OBD2 electronic engine control scanner or a OBD2 code reader. Once the code(s) are read then you must perform the diagnostics for each code and make the appropriate repairs based on the findings of the diagnosis that was performed, this is called doing "Pinpoint" testing.

I changed my spare plug wires but still the engine service soon light still is on

I have a 1999 Mercury tracer. I was driving down the highway two weeks ago and my check engine light came on. i went to autozone and he said something about misfire on bank and vacuum leak. He said it bascially was a tune up. i got in my car the next day and the light went off. it didnt come back on. Last sunday i got a tune up and a oil change. i was driving to work today when my service engine soon light came back on. could it be because its been warm here in st louis and all of a sudden its cold. or do i just need to get it reset. i hope its nothing major because im broke right now and cant afford to get it fixed

I have a 2005 Ford Focus ZX4 ST. I have less than 73k miles on it. Have never had any issues with it. Perform all the regular maintenance at required intervals. About a month ago the check engine light...

I would start with plug wires rubbing on something and created a short.and is not compleatly worn through. a cheep place to start. good luck with it.

Drive truck about 10 miles on highway and then throttle bogs down and service engine light comes on. any ideas where to start troubleshooting???

First place to start would be pull the DTC's from the ECM/PCM. Whenever the MIL (check engine, service engine soon) light comes on a code is stored in the on board computers memory. This code will help you determine what system is failing and where to check.

The "service engine soon" light just appeared on my 1997 Dodge Neon after I put in some oil. I bought the car second hand so I am not sure what oil was used before. I am wondering if anyone knows why it...

its because the car is due for a service soon,it gives you about 800 to 1000m warning of an impending bill .....
if you did lots of stop/start motoring the "service engine soon" light would come on sooner than lots of highway motoring.
just adding oil is not servicing the engine....and once done it needs reseting...

"Service engine soon" on highway

This is a hard code meaning there is something wrong scanning the PCM is your only real option.

"Service Engine Soon" warning light

The "service engine" light come on in about 80% of older cars quite frequently. Usually, it means nothing being related to some emissions component or similar. You can shut it of with a rented (for free,) tool at Autozone. The tool is a code-reader, and can also tell you what the specific cause is, as well as instruct the on-board computer to simply turn off the annoying light. Odds are it'll come back if you don't fix whatever trivial B.S. it is complaining about. Best advice: Unless it's something major, just live with it like everyone else. - Good Luck, John
