Check radiator coolant level (while it's cooled off) and see if you notice and leaks while cap is off. If coolant isn't all the way to the cap then you probably have air pockets in the cooling lines. Top of radiator and fill reservoir to correct level. To remove air run the car for a few minutes with cap either on but not closed or get a funnel that fits right into the cap opening (same as oil size) and run car. It will rid off all air but coolant will rise after air is gone or if no air present. Let it cool down for an hour or so and level should be at cap level or below. Top off if necessary and put cap on tight. If you see a leak then fix it immediately.

My 1989 acura overheated and now go thru alot of oil

There's not much you can do short of fixing the engine.
When it overheated, the metal in the cylinders may have warped, and the head gasket may have started leaking.
The oil is being burned thru the cylinders and out the tail pipe.

Blazer acts like its running out of fuel after driving a short distance and overheating also

Check the backpressure from your catalytic converter. A restricted exhaust acts alot like a fuel problem. The overheating may be a seperate problem; however, I would start with checking fuel pressure and exhaust back pressure.

Short in Steering Column?

I am no mechanic, but I cant see a direct correlation between an electrical short and overheating.
I had a bad water pump on my van and never overheated due to the mechanical fan that is on the main shaft that turns the pullies and such.
Sounds, unfortunately, like a freak coincidence. Sorry

Overheating

Generally when the heater isn't heating anything and putting out cold air the heater core is bad. I have never worked on a BMW before and have never heard of a heater core causeing overheating, but because they are linked, it maybe a clog in the core causing poor coolant circulation.

1994 chevy astro van won't start after it overheated

Check your battery and make sure it has plenty of water in it. When your vehicle was hot the water in the battery could have boiled dry also.
