99 chevy cavalier z24 manual trans, has black smoke from exhaust, idles ok but a bit rough at times. temp gage inop. replaced tank sending unit/pump to fix fuel gage problem, reads fuel now, but fluctuates. also replaced temp sensor, oil/filter change, coolant, plugs. Now also my gf reported that sometimes it dies when she takes her foot OFF the brake with the clutch in.

I didn't replace the cat yet. As far as the dieing problem, it happens when she's stopped with the brake and clutch in. When she takes her foot off the brake it dies. Will look into the o2 sensors. If they were bad wouldn't the check engine light come on?

The fuel gage fluctuates because the wiring connections to the sender are loose, tighten them.
The black smoke and the fact that it dies at idle when the tranny is engaged signals a way too rich mixture. Have the error codes checked and look at the oxygen sensor and the cat - something is wrong there, the cat should have stopped the smoke.

Not always - if the sensor has been damaged by fuel additives but it's still otherwise intact it will not be detected as damaged and the ECM will just think that it puts some extreme data and adjust everything accordingly - hence the black smoke.

Check the tightness of the manifold bolts and look for evidence of a leaking gasket. If it is an injected petrol engine it could be leaking injector seals. Sounds like a vacuum problem. PS check all vacuum lines for cracks. Col

Flashout code 12 and 33. 1989 cavalier 2.8l v-6 black smoke, runs rough and stalls. Map sensor replaced, tps replaced, fuel pressure checked... all ok.

If you have never tuned the vehicle up you may want to start with that. especialy sparkplugs cap and rotor, wires. Sounds like the black smoke is unburned fuel or incorrect fuel/air mixture.

Rough idle on 1999 chevy cavalier z24

Check for vacuum leaks. Spray some carb cleaner or WD40 around the intake manifold, trottle body and any vacuum lines. Check for loose connections on engine wiring harness (Maybe you disconnected a sensor, and forgot to re-attach it?).

1994 Toyota Tercel, Low power at lower rpms up to about 3k I'm guessing seeing as how I have no tach; picks up a bit after 3k rpms. Also runs rough at idle after it warms up. Cel code 25, I have replaced...

if the ignitioin system is ok and not in need of replacing, I would venture that your catalytic converter is plugged. Had similar issues with a Chevy and that was it, when you drive for a few minutes, then pop the hood, will your exhaust manifold flash fry an egg? is it red hot? then replace the converter and have a nice day. this would also foul your O2 sensor.

it sounds to me that the sensor your talking about is the camshaft positioning sensor. It regulates how much fuel you get to your engine, so that is also why you have the fuel smell as well.

it take water to make the gage work . if it a head problem i would do a compression check it should be around 125 or 150 psi if a cyclinder do not read then there your problem with the head if not a head problem and compression look good and u did not run for a long time . then the head might be ok then i would change the water pump and it should be good
