Question about 2004 Chrysler PT Cruiser

1 Answer

My 2004 PT Cruiser 4 cylinder has 117K on it. When I come to a complete stop and wheels stop turning the car's rpm's dip so low that the car sounds like its about to clonk out. About 3 out of 5 times the car idles that low it stalls out completely. I just had the air intake sensors cleaned along with all new spark plugs put it. It seems to make no difference if the ac is on or not. When the car is in nuetral whe can only rev it to 4 rpm's. I am not sure if that is signifigant or not. What is causing the low dip in the rpm's? We just had it with the mechanic less than 3 weeks ago. The problem started last week and has gotten progressivly worse. Any thoughts?

You said you just had the spark plugs replaced, could be that a spark plug wire was connected in the wrong spot, I would check that first, also does the car run smoothly going down the road? clogged fuel filter perhaps. Check engine light on? could alse be a sensor. This newer vehicles basically use a computer to control every aspect of the engine as far as keeping it running at top performance and the least amount of emmissions as possible.

When running down the interstate it seems to do fine. I recently felt a what I thought to be a little hesitation in gears changing. I came from driving a 5 speed so driving an automatic takes some getting used to. No check engine light has come on yet. I have been advised to check the idle control clynoid and the clutch on the torque convertor.

The Idle Control Valve is an electronic component, if it fails it should be registered by the computer and thus sends the check engine light on. I've never heard of a clutch for the torque converter, clutch will be only on manual transmissions, a torque converter basically is for automatic transmissions.

Why does it occasionally experience complete, temporary loss of electric when coming to stop?

Sounds like the idle speed of your car is too low, then the alternator cannot produce enough voltage for any electrical devices. When idle speed is normal or much higher, power will return to normal very fast. It may be that the idle air control valve is dirty or defective.

I have to keep putting air in my 2004 PT Cruiser tires on a weekly basis. I go through tires frequently.

sounds like you need to have them dipped in a tank to check for leaks as the bead probably needs a good wire brushing and some bead sealer put on them as aluminum wheels oxidize and cause this

Will not make any noise when valve's get bent, piston just hit's it enough to bent then, this is an interference engine, which the possibility of piston to valve damage in the event of timing belt failure is most likely to occur, also while in there doing repair's, I would also replace water pump, due to it's timing belt driven.

I have a 2004 PT Cruiser and when I have the air conditioning on and come to a stop and the car is idling the RPM'S dip and the car seems to be conking out but it doesn't. does the battery have anything to...

in a word, bollox, the battery has nothing to do with any a/c unit,
because the car is a small engine(relatively)the a/c power drain is about 25%so, when turned on, the cars computer will try to adjust the tickover to compensate for the drop in revs due to the power requirements of the a/c unit(try turning it off, then back on,you will see a drop in revs, then raise up).
the a/c unit is driven by a belt off the engine.
