Oil leak where trans. meets engine. Is this the oil pan gasket? or the rear main seal?

Could be either. It's rather cheap to change the oil pan gasket if you do it yourself. That would be my first route. If its the rear seal you have to pull the trans or engine to replace.

Replace oil pan on 2000 Jeep Cherokee

DRAIN THE OIL. REPLACE THE OIL DRAIN PLUG. REMOVE THE BOLTS AROUND THE EDGE OF THE OIL PAN. TAKE A FLAT HEAD SCREWDRIVER AND GENTLY PRY THE OIL PAN DOWN. REMOVE OILPAN. MAKE SURE THAT THE MATING SURFACE IS CLEAN AND THAT THE OLD GASKET IS COMPLETELY REMOVED. INSTALL IS REVERSE OF REMOVAL.

Oil leaks

clean off the area where you suspect the leak is then run and check. The only way to change rear main seal (and have it actually work) is by removing crankshaft. I have seen this attempted at least a hundred times and never seen one yet that didn't leak. Some of the new oils for "older engines" have a seal softener in them tha usually will help but don't expect results for months...it took years for seals to harden & wear.

if its leaking from the top then its the valve cover gaskets. if its underneath the either the oil pan gasket or the rear main seal.
