Question about Land Rover LR2

'08 LR2 - I've removed the upper and lower caliper bolts (front) and still unable to remove the caliper; won't budge. The rear was no problem. Is there an addt'l retainer that I'm missing somewhere? Thanks

Take a large screwdriver or pry bar and compress the caliper piston, it should then release the caliper.

all the bolts removed then all thats holding it is the adjustable tube in on the lower fitting ,put a bar in and try moving it then it will move as on the lower fitting with the long bolt is a tube in the alternator housing bracket and this is pulled or pushed out to make contact with the support bracket .Check you havent got three bolts holding it as some vehicles have two bolts on the bottom bracket or one long one

Replacing break pads on 2000 tarus


Remove & Replace the Brake Pads
  • Loosen lug nuts from the front wheels with the ratchet and socket, but do not remove them.
  • Raise the front of the vehicle using the floor jack and secure it with jack stands.
  • Remove the lug nuts from the wheels and pull the wheels from the vehicle.
  • Look on the rear of the brake caliper and locate the caliper bolts, one upper and one lower.
  • Loosen and remove the upper and lower caliper bolts using the ratchet and socket.
  • Pull the caliper from the brake assembly, exposing the brake pads, and hang the caliper from a suspension component, using the bungee strap. Do not allow the caliper to hang by its hose, as this may cause damage.
  • Grasp the inner and outer brake pads and pull them from the brake assembly. Take note of how they were positioned, as the new brake pads must be placed in the same fashion.
  • Place the new brake pads on the brake assembly in the same position the old ones were.
  • Position the c-clamp over the caliper so the screw portion is contacting the the caliper's piston--the metal cylindrical object inside the caliper--and the fixed portion of the clamp is contacting the rear of the caliper.
  • Tighten the c-clamp until the caliper's piston is fully pressed into the calipers body. The top of the piston is even with the caliper body when fully pressed in.
  • Loosen the c-clamp and remove it from the caliper.
  • Place the caliper over the new brake pads and hand-tighten the upper and lower caliper bolts.
  • Tighten the upper and lower caliper bolts to 26-foot pounds, using the torque wrench and a socket.
  • Repeat Steps 4 through 13 for the brake pads on the other side of the vehicle.
  • Place the wheels back on the vehicle and hand-tighten the lug nuts.
  • Remove the jack stands from under the vehicle and gently lower it to the ground.
  • Tighten the lug nuts to 100-foot pounds using the torque wrench and a socket.
  • Press and release the brake pedal repeatedly until it feels firm.

Check the backlash in bearing shaft direction and the axle hub deviation. Maximum for backlash should be 0.0020 in. (0.05mm) and for axle hub deviation 0.020 in. (0.05mm).

Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Rear tire and wheel assembly Rear stabilizer link Rear axle shaft nut Rear disc brake caliper and disc Speed sensor Parking brake assembly at the wheel hub No. 1 and 2 upper control arm assembly No. 1 and 2 rear suspension arm assembly Toe control link Rear axle from hub assembly using a plastic hammer No. 2 rear wheel bearing dust deflector using a screwdriver 4 bolts and rear axle hub and bearing assembly from the axle carrier assembly

To install:
  1. Install or connect the following:

    Hub on the carrier and tighten the bolts to 52 ft. lbs. (70 Nm) No. 2 rear wheel bearing dust deflector using a screwdriver Rear axle into hub assembly No. 1 and 2 upper control arm assembly. Torque the new nut to the No. 2 rear upper control arm to 52 ft. lbs. (70 Nm). Temporarily tighten the No. 1 arm bolt. No. 1 and 2 rear suspension arm assembly. Temporarily tighten. Toe control link. Torque new nut to 52 ft. lbs. (70 Nm). Rear stabilizer link. Torque to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm). Parking brake assembly at the wheel hub Rear speed sensor Rear axle shaft nut. Torque to 214 ft. Lbs. (290 Nm) and stake the nut with a chisel and hammer. Rear brake disc and disc brake caliper
  2. Adjust the parking brake.
  3. Stabilize the suspension as follows :
    1. Install the wheel(s).
    2. Lower the vehicle and bounce it up and down several times to stabilize the rear suspension.
    3. Raise the vehicle.
    4. Remove the wheel.
    5. Jack up the rear lower suspension armplacing a wood block in between. Apply a load to the suspension so that the lower suspension arm is plkaced in a horizontal position.

  4. Fully tighten the No. 1 rear upper control arm assembly to 119 ft. lbs. (161 Nm).
  5. Fully tighten the No. 1 rear suspension arm assembly to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm).
  6. Fully tighten the No. 2 rear suspension arm assembly to 119 ft. lbs. (161 Nm).

    Rear tire and wheel assembly

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE If it is necessary to replace the hub or bearing, replace the components as an assembly.


    Rear tire and wheel assembly If equipped with rear disc brakes, the caliper mounting bolts. Leave the brake line connected and suspend the assembly out of the way. Brake rotor or drum 4 bolts and pull off the rear axle hub O-ring

To install:
  1. Install or connect the following:

    Hub on the carrier and tighten the bolts to 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm) Rotor or drum Caliper, f equipped with rear disc brakes and tighten the bolts to 34 ft. lbs. (64 Nm) Wheel

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2. If equipped with air suspension, move the height control switch in the trunk area to the OFF position.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable Rear wheel(s) Height control sensor link from the lower control arm Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) speed sensor and wiring harness Brake caliper bracket from the rear axle carrier by removing the 2 bolts. Support the caliper with a piece of wire. Brake rotor Parking brake shoes and cable Cotter pin, lock cap and the nut holding the halfshaft to the rear axle Suspension member brace by removing the 2 bolts Halfshaft bolts and washers Halfshaft from the vehicle Strut rod
  4. Place matchmarks on the adjusting cam and body for the No. 1 control arm.
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Nut and adjusting cam Nut on the axle carrier side of the No. 1 lower control arm Separate the control arm from the axle carrier No. 1 lower control arm Stabilizer bar link from the No. 2 lower control arm.
  6. Place matchmarks on the adjusting cam and body.
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Nut and adjusting cam from the No. 2 lower control arm Nut and bolt holding the No. 2 lower control arm to the axle carrier No. 2 control arm from the vehicle Nut and bolt on the lower side of the strut assembly 2 upper control arm set nuts and bolts Axle carrier with the upper control arm
  8. Secure the axle carrier in a vise.
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Nut holding the upper control arm to the axle carrier and remove the control arm Dust deflector. Use a suitable prytool. Oil seal

  10. Remove the 2 bolts and nuts and shift the backing the plate towards the hub side (outside).
  11. Remove or disconnect the following:

To install:
  1. Install or connect the following:

    New bearing to the axle housing Snapring to the axle carrier, using snapring pliers New outer oil seal. Coat the oil seal lip with multipurpose grease.

Tighten the nut to 80 ft. lbs. (108 Nm). Axle carrier and upper control arm to the vehicle as an assembly 2 upper control arm set bolts and tighten the bolts to 121 ft. lbs. Align the matchmarks and tighten the nut to 57 ft. lbs. (78 Nm). Strut rod to the axle carrier and body. Install the bolt and nut to hold the strut rod to the body. Tighten to 57 ft. lbs. (78 Nm). Bolt and nut to hold the strut rod to the axle carrier. Tighten to 136 ft. lbs. (184 Nm) Parking brake shoes and cable Outboard joint side of the halfshaft and align the matchmarks on the side gear shaft and the halfshaft. Coat the threads with clean oil and install the hexagon bolts. Tighten bolts to 61 ft. lbs. (83 Nm). Suspension member brace with the 2 bolts. Tighten the 2 bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm). Nut to hold the halfshaft to the rear axle. Tighten the nut to 213 ft. lbs. (289 Nm). Lock cap and cotter pin Brake disc to the axle hub with the matchmarks aligned. Install the 2 screws and tighten the screws to 48 inch lbs. (5 Nm). Brake caliper to the vehicle and install the 2 bolts. Tighten the bolts to 77 ft. lbs. (104 Nm). ABS speed sensor and wiring harness Height control sensor link with the matchmarks aligned. Tighten the nut to 48 inch lbs. (5 Nm). Rear wheel(s) Negative battery cable

  2. Lower the vehicle and turn ON the air suspension switch.

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure, while using the following torque values:

    Backing plate bolts: 43 ft. lbs. (59 Nm) No. 1 lower suspension arm bolt: 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm) No. 2 lower suspension arm bolt: 81 ft. lbs. (110 Nm) Toe control link nut: 36 ft. lbs. Stabilizer Bar

Removal & Installation

  1. Remove the rear wheels.
  2. Remove the 2 nuts and left stabilizer bar link. If the ball joint turns together with the nut, use a hexagon wrench (5 mm) to hold the stud. Repeat for the right side.
  3. Remove the 8 bolts, 2 No. 1 brackets and 2 bushings. Two types of bolts are used, so make sure the correct bolts are installed.
  4. Remove the stabilizer bar.

To install:
  1. Install the stabilizer bar.
  2. Install the bushing and bracket with the 2 bolts and tighten to 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm). Install the bushing to the inner side of the bushing stopper on the stabilizer bar.
  3. Connect the stabilizer bar links and tighten the nuts to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm). Repeat for the right side.
  4. Install the rear wheels.
  5. Inspect and adjust rear wheel alignment.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:
    CAUTION Do NOT remove the center nut to the strut at this time. The spring on the strut is under high pressure and can cause serious injury.

Need information on how to reinstall rear brakes on 2000 beetle


Remove the old Brake Pads
  • 1 Park your car on a level surface. If you have a stick shift car make sure the car is in gear. Do not set the parking brake. Place blocks in front of the front tires so the car does not move while you are working on it.
  • 2 Open the hood of your car and locate the master cylinder. If necessary, remove brake fluid until the level in the container is less than half full. A turkey baster is a good tool for this. Put the brake fluid in the plastic container and dispose of it the way you dispose of motor oil.
  • 3 Raise the rear end of your car with your car jack. Remove the rear tire or wheel assembly.
  • 4 Remove the parking brake cable from the back of the caliper. Use the pliers to remove the cable clip (restraining clip).
  • 5 Use the socket wrench to remove the upper mounting bolt from the caliper. If the upper guide pin moves while you do this, use a back-up wrench to hold the upper guide pin.
  • 6 Rotate the caliper downward, pivoting it on the lower caliper bolt. Remove the inner and outer brake pads from the caliper.
  • Install the new Brake Pads
  • 1 Turn the caliper piston clockwise to retract it into the caliper housing. Insert the new brake pads into the caliper.
  • 2 Swing the caliper upward and into place. Apply a thin coat of thread locking compound to the bolt and use the socket wrench to tighten the bolt to 271 inch lb. (35 Nm).
  • 3 Reattach the parking brake cable to the caliper.
  • 4 Replace the tire wheel assembly. Lower the car to the ground.
  • 5 Pump the brake pedal a few times to seat the brake pads. Do this before trying to move your car.
  • 6 Add fluid to the master cylinder container to replace any you removed before you removed the old brake pads.
  • 7 Season the brake pads by making only gentle stops when you are driving for the first week after you install the new brake pads. Try not to do any hard stopping when you are seasoning the brakes.

    How do you change the front brakes?


    The front brakes should be Disc, if it is you will need to remove the Caliper bolts, the upper and lower, and the Caliper will pull away from the rotor, depress the cylinder and the old brake pads will just pop out, replace the pads and postion the Caliper back on the rotor and tighten the upper and lower bolts, it is a very simple job.

    How do you replace the front and rear brakes in a 2003 pontiac Grand Prix


    Removal & Installation Front To Remove:
    1. Inspect the fluid level in the master cylinder reservoir. Remove fluid from the reservoir until the level is lower then half way between the MAX and MIN levels.
    2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
    3. Install 2 wheel nuts to secure the rotor on the hub.
    4. Remove the bottom brake caliper pin bolt.
    5. Pivot the brake caliper body upward and secure out of the way. Do NOT disconnect the hydraulic brake flexible hose from the caliper.
    6. Compress the piston back into the bore using a C-clamp. Figure of brake assembly with caliper raised showing brake pads in mounting bracket gmpc_l4.gif

    7. Remove the inboard and outboard brake pads from the brake caliper bracket.
    To Install:
    1. Install the brake pad retainers and both brake pads into the caliper bracket.
    2. Pivot the brake caliper down over the brake pads and into the brake caliper bracket. Insert the lower brake caliper pin bolt and torque bolt to 70 ft-lb. (95 Nm).
    3. Reinstall the tire and wheel assembly.
    4. Lower the vehicle.
    5. Refill the master cylinder. Pump the brake pedal several times to seat the pads against the rotor.
    6. Check the master cylinder level and add fluid as necessary.
    Rear To Remove:

    7. Remove the brake pad clips from the caliper bracket.
    8. Compress the piston back into the bore using a C-clamp and the old inner pad.
    To Install:
    1. Install new brake clips in the caliper bracket.
    2. Install the inboard and outboard pads in the caliper bracket.
    3. Pivot the caliper up over the pads.
    4. Reinstall the upper mounting bolt and tighten to 32 ft. lbs. (44 Nm).
    5. Remove the 2 wheel nuts securing the rotor.
    6. Reinstall the tire and wheel assembly.
    7. Refill the master cylinder. Pump the brake pedal several times to seat the pads against the rotor.
    8. Check the master cylinder level and add fluid as necessary.

    prev.gif next.gif Some GM Vehicles use aT-30 Torx bit, other use a regular hex head bolt with a ratchet tor remove the caliper. The following shows how to remove the caliper from the line. Brake Caliper Removal & Installation Front To Remove:
    1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
    2. If the brake fluid level is higher than midway between the maximum-full point and the minimum allowable level, remove brake fluid to the midway point before proceeding.
    3. Raise and support the vehicle.
    4. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
    5. Hand tighten 2 wheel lug nuts to retain the rotor to the hub.
    6. Install a large C-clamp over the brake caliper with the ends of the clamp against the rear of the caliper body and the outer brake pad.
    7. Tighten the C-clamp until the caliper piston is compressed into the bore enough to allow the piston to slide past the rotor and remove the C-clamp.
    8. Disconnect the brake line from the caliper and discard the two copper gaskets.
    9. Plug the brake line and the opening in the brake caliper. NOTE: On second design hardware, the upper caliper pin bolt has a bushing as part of the bolt. The lower caliper pin bolt is of a solid design.
    10. Remove the caliper pin bolts and the caliper from the bracket.
    To Install:
    1. Replace any damaged caliper pin boots.
    2. If reusing the brake caliper pin bolts, wipe the old grease from the brake caliper pin bolts.
    3. On first design hardware apply high temperature silicone brake lubricant to the brake caliper pin bolts. On second design hardware, apply a thin coat of NIGLUBE® or equivalent grease to the brake caliper pin bolts. In either case it is not necessary to apply lubricant to the threads of the pin bolts.
    4. Install the brake caliper over the brake pads into the brake caliper bracket. NOTE: On second design hardware, the upper caliper pin bolt has a bushing as part of the bolt. The lower caliper pin bolt is of a solid design.
    5. Install the caliper pin bolts and torque to 38 ft-lbs (51 Nm) (1996 - 1999), 63 ft-lbs (85 Nm) (2000 – 2005).
    6. Install the brake hose bolt with new copper brake hose gaskets to the brake hose and to the brake caliper, torque to 33 ft-lbs (45 Nm) (1996 – 2001) 32 ft-lbs (43 Nm) (2002 – 2005).
    7. Bleed the brake system.
    8. With the engine OFF, gradually apply the brake pedal to approximately 2/3 of its travel distance and slowly release the pedal. Wait 15 seconds and do it again until a firm brake pedal is obtained.
    9. Remove the 2 wheel lug nuts to retain the rotor to the hub.
    10. Install the tire and wheel assembly.
    11. Lower the vehicle.

    How do i replace my front brake pads on my pontiac montana 2003


    you will need a 15mm wrench, a pad spreder, and high temp greese
    1 remove the lower caliper bolt
    2 lift the caliper uppward
    3 remove the inner and outer pad
    4 depress the caliper
    5 lube upper and lower sides of the new pads and rear of pad (this will preent squeeks)
    6 reverse procedure


    remember pump brakes at least 10 times before test driving have fun and good luck

    you need to remove the caliper by removing the brackets, not hard just remove 3 bolts. 1-remove the lower caliper bolt, 2- flip the caliper up and out of the upper bolt and then move it aside. and then remove two 17 or 19 mm bolt for bracket.
