Modern speed odometer are controlled by the computer. It more than likely is the meter itself. You will need to remove the dask section an repair or replace the unit itself.
You could have a faulty speedometer/odometer combination meter causing a false Vehicle Speed Sensor error.
My 1998 Sienna had the following symptoms:
- Speedometer and odometer failed intermittently
- The check engine light would come on and I would get a p0500 code in the OBDII.
- The cruise control would stop working at the same time the speedometer failed.
There is a speed sensor in each one of the tires and they feed the speed information to the ABS ECU. From the ABS ECU the speed signal goes to the speedometer/odometer combination meter, and from there it goes to the Engine Control Module and to the Cruise Control ECU. I could see a signal coming into the speedometer/odometer, but no signal going out. Replacing the speedometer/odometer combination meter fixed the problem.
i also have a 99v70. As i was driving the car home 2 days ago in cruise control. Suddenly the speedo dropped to '0'. The cruise control quit and the abs, upshift arrow, and check engine light came on. The solutions is the 'abs control unit' From Volvo; 870.00 from Advance; 256.00 w/ core exchange. Its fixed all those dash issues.good luck
1st question, yes the spedometer has to work for the cruise to work or it has to at least get a signal from the speed sensor, if the problem is just the speedometer head then the cruise will still work, as a matter of fact that is how we test the system if when one of these come in the shop with an in-op speedometer we take them out and try the cruse if the cruse workes then we know the problem is just the speedometer head, if the cruse does not worn then it is a problem with the speed sensor or the control circuits for the speed sensor.
2nd question there is no way to bypass the the system to mke the cruise work yo dont have a speed sensor signal so the cruise has nothing to use a refrance in a way it thinks the car is not moving.
good luck, try replace the speed sensor in the transmission it might fix both problems.
your missing a repair manual that shows the computer circuits for the whole car--a scan doesnt always tell u the complete solution-maybe git onother--the instrument cluster may be failin or u hav some grounding issue
It is easiest if you take the air filter and its casing off. use a 8mm
wrench to disconnect the top of the case. there should be three 10mm
bolts holding the bottom of the case to the frame. Once the air filter
case is off the speed sensor connection is almost directly under it,
slightly more towards the engine, on top of the automatic transmission.
A 1998 Tiburon has a pulse generating speed sensor, which means there
is only one connection to deal with, but it has two sensors which bolt
onto the transmission. To remove the old sensor, press the release pin
on the connection, to do this I use a small Allen wrench. It is easiest
to follow the lines of the old sensor to find where the two sensors are
to be placed. Once the two sensors are found, they can be removed using
a 10mm wrench. it may be easiest to replace the far sensor with the
driver side wheel removed, or at least the car should be elevated.Good luck and keep me posted.
Sounds that the magnetic pickup on the vehicle speed sensor has stopped working. Dirt or grease usually. That will cause an erratic reading. Also check wiring to sensor. Poor connection is rare but possible. Good luck and have a good day.
