2002 Kia Sportage 2.0L dohc, is an interference engine, will cause piston to valve damage, Kia recommends timing belt replacement in California every 90,000 miles, except California every 60,000 miles, hope this was very helpful.

not true sorry this is actually a non-interference engine. I have personally rebuilt this engine and Im here to tell you it is non-interference. If you doubt me call kia corperate and they will tell you the same. Then ask them why the hell they list it as an interference engine? I have already done this and the answer i got was it was a type o.

How to change plugs on 02 kia sportage

  • 1

Keep a regular schedule for inspecting the spark plugs on your 2002 Kia Sportage. According to the official 2002 Kia Sportage owner's manual, spark plugs and ignition wires should be inspected every two years or 48,000 miles, whichever comes first.

  • 2

Let your 2002 Kia Sportage sit for a few hours before opening the engine compartment. You want to make sure that the engine is cool before you begin working on it.

  • 3

Pop open the hood of your Sportage and locate the ignition wires, which will be attached to the top of your engine. The 2002 Kia Sportage has a four-cylinder engine, meaning there are four spark plugs each attached to an ignition wire. The ignition wires run from the engine to the fuse box, which is located in the left side of the engine compartment.

  • 4

Inspect the ignition wires of your 2002 Kia Sportage. These wires will need to be replaced if they appear worn.

  • 5

Disconnect the ignition wire to your spark plugs. Grab the rubber boot located near the base of the wire and pull upward instead of yanking on the wire. Remove only one wire at a time, or mark the wires with a colored Sharpie marker before disconnecting all of them. Improperly reconnecting the ignition wires can seriously affect the performance of your Kia Sportage.

  • 6

Attach the spark plug socket to your socket wrench. Use the socket wrench to remove the spark plug from the top of the engine's cylinder.

  • 7

Inspect the spark plug. There will be some soot, but if the spark plug is completely covered in soot, it needs to be replaced.

  • 8

Position your replacement spark plug in place and secure it with the spark plug socket on your socket wrench. Be careful not to overtighten the spark plug after it has been snuggly fitted.

  • 9

Position the rubber boot of the proper ignition wire in place above the spark plug and insert it with your hands. Close the hood of your 2002 Kia Sportage

Is the 2002 2.0l sportage motor an interferance motor

Yes , it is. This website makes the timing belts and most other belts and will tell you if your engine is an interference engine. Yours is and I had to replace the engine in one as the owner drove it til the belt stripped and the valves were buried in the pistons, so make sure you change it at the mileage the owners manual calls for. http://www.gates.com/part_locator/index.cfm?location_id=3598

My timing belt broke on my 2002 kia sportage is the engine gone?

    Hello
Although the 2.0 kia engine is an interference engine.(valve bender) The
odd's that you have bent valves depend greatly on how high the rpm's
where when the belt broke, if you where on the hi way the odd's sway
against you, around town they swing in your favor. That said, the kia's
survival rate for this problem is pretty good compared to many other
rubber band driven engines. Hope this helps.

I HAVE A 2002 KIA SPORTAGE. IT STALLED ON ME.

Hello mrhbollinger: My name is Roger and I will help you. You did not say Exactly what happened. If you were driving down the road and the engine died? Or if you pulled up to a stop and the engine died? I would check a few things first. Does the engine have over 60,000 to100,000 miles on it? If so I would look at the timing belt as a problem. Check the compression Compression should be around 160 psi. Any thing less then a 100 psi. the cylinder will not fire. Also keep in mind that this engine is a interference engine. This means should the timing belt break. The engine will suffer severe internal engine damage. By that I mean any valve that was open when timing belt broke will be damaged. Piston damage will also accrue. If the timing belt is not th problem I would look at the fuel system you should have 43 psi at the test port.I would also test for spark at the spark plug wires. If you have none and you check spark first. Check compression to make sure the timing belt is not the problem. If you remove the oil cap and can see the the camshaft. Have some one crank the engine over. If the valves do not move the timing belt is the problem. Should you need further help please just ask Thank You for using Fix Ya. Roger

Timing belt broke on 1998 kia sportage, need the correct points

Hi, Just to clarify and clear things up, the motor used in the 1998 to 2002 Kia Sportage is actually the Mazda FE3 engine and it is a NON-INTERFERENCE engine.

For any an all repair information on any Kia vehicle produced you can access the KGIS system (Kia Global Information System), just go to www.kiatechinfo.com and create and account (its completely FREE). After you do this you will have access to all the Kia Shop Manuals, DTC Manuals, Recall information for your vehicle and more.

I just had the same problem with my Sportage and found all the information that I needed through KGIS. Hope this helps and good luck on fixing your Sportage.
