2003 Mitsubishi outlander all wheel drive my rear

2003 Mitsubishi outlander all wheel drive my rear tires have (really bad) negative camber, getting mixed answers from Mitsu, some tell me that camber is not adjustable, other tech also from Mitsu says that camber is adjustable. i can't find a camber kit for this car..., could it be the suspension? how do i tell if the struts are cooked? the bushing all look good..... can looks be decieving?? nothing looks bent or twisted, this issue is with both tires no accidents or harsh use... was moms car and she is 55 yrs. drives like she is 70. i don't have the money to buy parts and be wrong.... please help!!!

No solution yet but have same prob on my 03. Rear tires shot after only 10000 miles. NTB gonna diagnose for free. Got 4 tires and 4wheel alignment last year from them. Service mgr thinks it's prob suspension but will prorate michelin tires. Betcha it'll still cost me a thousand. :(

You may need a Camber kit installed, the camber is preset on most cars these days but they do make kits to add or subtract Camber, you likely have a Camber issue here. Camber is the tilt of the wheel outward or inward, to much positive can scrub the tire like you stated it was doing. You need to find a really good front end tech and explain the problem to him and he can custom align to stop the wear issue.

If its not the bearing and your Mercury is front wheel drive, it could be the "CV" joints.
It could be both....

Is the wheel rubbing the brake caliper?

Is something like the wheel well liner rubbing the tire(airflow pushing it into tire)?

Jack the tire off the ground and rotate it by hand. Push in & out at the top, sides, and bottom of the tire. Little or no play is considered acceptable. If you get a "clunking" sound and/or a lot of play the bearing(s) are bad. (If front wheel drive, chock rear tires, put transmission in neutral so you can rotate tire.)

My C70 has way more wear on the inside of the rear wheels. So I took it for new tires and a 4 wheel alliegnment. The tire shop says that this wear is due to excess negative camber and at 2 1/2 degrees on...


2.5 degrees negative camber is not within spec. You need new control arms in the rear. These will set your camber back to the factory setting and reduce your tire wear on the inner edge. The first shop you went to is correct, the camber cannot be adjusted, components must be replaced to rectify the excessive camber. Ive done a couple of New Style C70 rear control arms for this very reason, if your vehicle is under warranty however, the dealer needs to be able to prove that the car needs it. So if you dont have wear on your tires and when the toe was set it readjusted the camber (when you adjust toe it affects camber and caster measurements) then they cant prove to Volvo that it needs the control arms. have you lowered the car? There are bolts that you can get which allow you to adjust your camber. They are called cam bolts, I found some at my local napa store. I would really recommend taking the car to a tire shop or a shop with an alignment rack. If you try to eyeball it, chances are that you will have weird handling, and possibly accelerated tire wear. I fixed my negative camber issues on my 91 eclipse gs-t at my local community college while I was taking the suspension class. I have since steppe up to an evo8. Mitsubishi's are my favorite!

Definately an alignment issue. May even be something damaged. Need to find out as you may have a pre-existing condition that you can take back to where you purchsed this vehicle.

Had a similar problem with a different car. Rear struts / spings were worn. Caused rear to sag enough to push wheels out and wear out inside portion of tires.

The rear brakes are the same drum & brake shoe type.
Each rear wheel has a brake drum that rotates with the wheel. When the brakes are applied, a brake shoe is forced into contact with the brake drum to slow wheel rotation...........................sodeep

That is right; the car has no built in adjustment for toe-in of the rear tires when the camber gets really bad. It has an adjustment for camber, and it can be used to adjust toe-in, but when your wheels start leaning badly, you can't do both.
