2000 dodge caravan running hot

This could be from many things.

Low coolant
Head gasket
Temp sending unit

Most common is the thermostat, simply change and see if it worked. Second , but first before I change the thermostat make sure your coolant is full and if it is not too dirty. Also make sure the water pump is in working order. Are you getting heat? If so the pump probally is fine as it is circulating water to the heater core. When running the vehicle does it have a thick white cloud of smoke and does it smell like antifreeze, also check to see if there is water draining from the tail pipe. These are signs of a blown head gasket. Is the vehicle truly overheating or is it the sending temp unit? This can give a faulse reading to make it seem the vehicle is over heating if the sending unit is bad.

Good Luck!

Check engine light on oreily said low temp . change tstat?

if it hasn't reached the temp it should, stays cold in temp guage, than yes, change the tstat...fairly simple job, just don't overtighten and break the bolts

My 2006 GMC Yukon XL Denali 6.0L is over heating and the interior heat does not work. Is this the water pump or is there a thermostat sticking? I'm in the mountains and thought maybe something was frozen...

overheating can be caused by stuck shut t-stat but u would have heat at-stat stuck open no overheating and no heat. a waterpump that the impeller broke or rotted of can cause your problem but rarly seen does your fan work or any leakage or low coolant can cause air pocket and overheating no heat. let me know and we go foward

Engine temp

try skewing the engine coolant temperature sensor with a multi-meter and a temp vs resistance or voltage chart. the ect could be out of range and not set a code. also check actual engine temp with an infrared thermometer. hope this helps

How to diagnose a bad water pump

Not that big a job, to pull the t-stat and test it in hot water in the house.
If you have a candy thermometer and a large pot, suspend the stat in the water via string, heat the water and observe if the stat opens up.
If yes, the at what temp, most are between 170-190 degrees?
If not then you have at least one suspect.
You can also button up the Ford and start it up, does it still over heat without the stat?
Even with the engine cold the pump should still circulate water.
Either way the fastest method is to turn a few wrenches to get a suspect stat out to test.
If you have a cooling issue when was the last time you changed fuild and/or did a superflush of the cooling system?

97 f 150 runs hot for minutes then runs ok

It could be a faulty thermostat. Did it do the same thing before u replaced the t-stat? It sounds like it's sticking closed, then all of a sudden it opens, coolant flows correctly. I'd consider changing it again. Check to make sure parts store is giving u the correct temperature thermostat also. Maybe it's too high for your Ford, delaying the opening.

Car problems

In my country, most overheating issues on Volkswagen models are resolved by:
  • entirely removing the thermostat (not applicable in cold regions);
  • wiring the fan to switch on once the engine is running (with or without the A/C or heater being turned on);
  • replacing the radiator thermal switch for the fan to a lower temp.
Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.
