Have the glow plugs checked. One or more of them may be faulty and this will lead to hard starting when cold. It may also be the glow plug control unit/timer.
Diesel ignites because of heat caused by comprissing the air in the combustion chamber and not by a spark as in petrol engines.
In a cold engine you need to "add" a little heat. This is done by the glow plugs which are in effect an electrical heater.

Pumping the throttle does not help just hold it wide open ,firstly check the preheaters ,and if they all work make another posting and we go from their ,,to check glow plugs remove the cable that connects then alkl together and then test with a cable from the + battery terminal and see if it sparks when you touch each heater plug in turn ,and renew the defective ones or go the whole hog and just change them .

I dont think that you are installing the proper pump, you should really try using a new or remands water pump for a diesel, as the bolt patterns maybe different.

pumping the throttle pedal will not make it start any easier ,i would suggest trying to change the autochoke temperature sensor so it enriches the fuel when its cold .but even this wouldnt throw the engine light on so again i would ask a local mechanic to have a look for you and read the codes as to why the engine light is on

can't say for sure but almost all engines that have come to me needing ether to cold start have poor compression. test the compression first.
you sould never need to use ether on a gas engine and very carefully on a diesel when very cold.

Don't know if it applies to your diesel but most later gas engined vehicles have a 'cold start' valve that supplies additional fuel to the fuel/air mix along with boosting the idle speed until some warming of the engine is sensed.
