Question about 1986 Buick Century

1 Answer

Hey, I'm not a car guy at all but I'll try my best to describe the problem. I have a 1986 Buick Century Estate Wagon, and for some reason it likes to randomly overheat/probably for a certain reason. My brother and I tested the pressure in the radiator opening (pop the cap) and the gauge wasn't moving, which means there was no leak...if I understood that right. But somewhere there is excessive pressure build up and that caused this small rubber piece, near the radiator cap, to pop a hole - which in turn shot coolant all over, causing overheating. He was thinking possibly replacing the radiator and taking a hammer to the thermostat, to relieve some pressure/prolong the problem. That was a really weak description of the issue and if more is needed let me know. Thanks.

Probably thermostat sticking or bad water pump. CK the belt to the water pump to see if it's loose. If the thermostat sticks, water can't be pumped thru the motor, overheats and overheats the radiator causing hot water or steam to build up pressure.and the relief valve will open allowing the peessure to be relieved and blows coolent everywhere. If the radiator overheats turn off motor wait until the radiator cools before removing cap. been there, done that-------once

@Connellyjame Thank you for the help bud, I will test this out once I can get to my car.(about a week ago) My brother checked the water pump and said it was fine, and he was going to change out the thermostat as well but said it was brand new. Maybe it is indeed sticking.

A thing to note: he said it may be the Head Cover gaskets. He is also convinced that there is a clog somewhere, but he couldn't really find one.

    Thanks again

Timing adjustment for a 1987 buck century estate wagon 3.8 liter v-6

On older vehicles... loosen the bolt holding the distributer and turn a little clockwise or counter clockwise. If you have a timing light plug it into the spark plug wire of the #1 cylinder and look for the timing marks on the front of the harmonic balancer. But you could just wing it without a light.

Well i just bought a 1986 buick century and i need to know how to take the water pump off and install another myself

if it's a 2.5,you'll need to pull the 90 degree manifold WITH the pump to avoid pulley interference. much easier.
