Most likely it is the anti theft module. The computer thinks the car has been stolen. The only solution I have been

able to find is to tow it to a dealer. They are the only one who can reprogram the module in the steering column to

match your existing keys. It is a huge secret and they will lie to you about how it is done. There is a special

computer they use that is kept under lock and key and when they plug it in to your car, it connects to the factory

and the mechanic at your dealer does not even know what happens. I have searched the internet for hours and

hours and the information is not out there. Your auto club should pay the tow. Make sure you keep the door lock

remote or spare key in your pocket because the computer will lock the doors without warning and if the keys are

in the ignition you are screwed.

Well you may have more than one problem.
As far as cranking, a mechanic would check for voltage at the starter and trace back to the key switch. The key switch could cause both problems. There is also a neutral safety switch that could cause it not to crank.
You could also have a bad ground connection between the engine and body.

1988 Trans Am will not start when ignition is turned all the way.


Take a test light to the small wire on the starter and have someone turn it to the start position. If the light lights up and the engine doesn't turn over, I would suspect the starter itself. If the test light doesn't light, try it in neutral and repeat test. If it still doesn't light up, it may be the PRNDL switch or the ignition switch itself.

Go under the car and see if you have 12 volts at the purple wire to the starter solenoid when the key is held to crank position, the wire may be broken or the starter solenoid is defective.

The start circuit from the ignition switch to neutral safety switch to the solenoid on the starter might be bad. Look for power there at solenoid or at neutral safety switch when it doesn't want to crank over.

If the starter turns but doesn't engage then the starter relay is defective. Have it replaced.

Get dashboard lights but car wont turn over not a sound


Thanks for choosing FixYa and welcome. This means that power is present. Locate your starter. The hot side battery wire, one leads to the alternator and the other to the starter. It is usually on the bottom front of the engine. Hit it a few times with a hammer, just enough to give it a decent hit. See if the car will start. You probably have a bad starter or starter solenoid. If it starts, it still will need changed asap. If it doesn't, it may be a bad ignition switch. Also, check to make sure the battery is cleaned, no residue.

Yesterday i changed my passenger side mirror connected the wires and while i was driving it was good when i cut car off it wont start now ,but all the lights and everything works but it wont crank?


First you need to find out if the car will start when jump started or battery charger assisted. If it does, it is probably either the battery or alternator. You can have them both checked for free at most autoparts stores.

If it doesn't start, then you have to figure out if it is the starter or something in the engine froze up. If you take the serpentine belt off and can turn the main crank shaft with a large wrench then the engine is free and your starter is the problem. If it won't turn you have internal engine problems.

This sounds like there is a dead spot in your starter. The easiest way to resolve this issue is to replace your starter. Many times, if you take a lot of short-distance trips over the life of your car, the wiring inside the starter itself will wear (short trips means starting it more often, causing a lot of wear over time). Then the inner wiring of the starter wears too much, it forms a "dead spot" -- when the starter is stopped at a very specific spot i will not form the magnetic force needed to torn the starter motor. This is a common issue which can be dealt with for a time if you have to save the money to replace the starter. Tapping the starter, or arcing it with a screwdriver makes the inner workings of the starter jump a little, allowing it to move out of the dead spot and kick over as normal, but it is only a temporary fix. Unless you refurbish electronics for a living, it is very unlikely that you will be able to repair the starter on your own, and such a repair takes some time, so you are better off to replace it than try to repair the starter itself.
As long as the starter does not happen to stop in the dead spot, it will work as normal ... but in time the dead spot will spread, causing the issue to worsen. You can keep forcing it to turn with the two tricks you used until you have had the opportunity to earn the money to replace the starter (or until you have a day off to get the repairs done) .. but over time this can cause more damage to other parts of the car, so I recommend replacing the starter as soon as you can.

does it crank?? if not possible starter malfunction.
if it does crank but doesn`t start then it is ignition problem and you will have to tow vehicle to repair shop.
