Question about 2006 Volkswagen New Beetle

2006 vw bug. Gas turbo 2.0,convert. I have a radiator overheating. Dont see any leaks on the engine. Just an overflow from the overflow bottle onto the garage floor after shut down that turns on the coolant low light the next time I go to drive it.. The fuses on top of the battery look good. I reseated all three of them. Is there an in line temp sensor that tells the fan when to turn on? What is its location? The last owner kept the manual. VW says they can get me one in a week for $100...I think I would rather use the $ for the VW anti freeze that I have to use..thank for any help

Change the radiator cap. The spring on yours is getting week. The reason it does it when you shut it off and doesnt do it when its running is cause the water pump sucks the coolant out of the radiator while it is pumping so there is not much pressure on it but when you shut car off the coolant stops curculating and egine heat is not transfered coolant exspands and pushes on the cap. If your spring in the cap is getting week then it pushes it up letting the coolant pass by to your overflow tank.

I would say it is possible an overheated engine which is not coolling the transmission can trigger a lot of lights. Many transmissons are heated and coolled by a line which goes to the radiator of the engine cooling system.

CAR OVERHEATING FIRST CHECK FOR LOW COOLANT IN THE RADIATOR COOLANT OVERFLOW JUG.IF COOLANT LEVEL IN OVERFLOW JUG LOW REFILL ADD COOLANT BACK TO THE FULL COLD MARK.PUT RADAITOR CAP ON COOLANT OVERFLOW JUG START ENGINE LET IT IDLE UNTIL IT OPERATING TEMPERATURE.MAKE SURE TOP RADIATOR HOSE GETTING HOT WHILE ENGINE WARM UP.IF TOP RADIATOR HOSE DONT GET HOT WHILE ENGINE IDLING YOUR THERMOSTAT COULD BE STUCK CLOSE CAUSING CAR TO OVERHEAT.IF TOP HOSE IS GETTING HOT.CHECK FOR COOLANT LEAKS CHECK TOP RADIATOR HOSE AND BOTTOM RADIATOR HOSE FOR LEAKS.CHECK FOR LEAKS AT THE RADIATOR CORES AND PLASTIC SIDE CONTAINERS.IF ALL IS GOOD ENGINE OVERHEATING WHILE IN A LONG TRAFFIC LINE, COOLANT FANS NOT COMING ON.COULD HAVE FAULTY ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR OR BLOWN COOLING FAN FUSE OR RELAY.COULD HAVE PCM FAULT.MAKE COOLING FAN ELECTRICAL CONNECTORS AND WIRING NOT DAMAGE OR BROKEN.

Yes you can do it yourself

Degas Bottle Removal
  1. Drain radiator (8005) until engine coolant is out of degas bottle. Disconnect radiator overflow hose (8075) and engine coolant vent hose at degas bottle.
  1. Remove power steering oil reservoir retaining screws and position power steering oil reservoir (3A697) out of the way.
  1. Remove degas bottle return hose and clamp. Remove degas bottle retainers and remove degas bottle.
Installation
  1. Position degas bottle in vehicle and install retaining screw and nut. Tighten retaining bolt and nut to 9-12 Nm (80-106 lb-in).
  1. Connect degas bottle hose and clamp to degas bottle.
  1. Position power steering oil reservoir onto degas bottle and install retaining screws securely.
  1. Connect radiator overflow hose and engine coolant vent hose to degas bottle.
  1. Fill and bleed engine cooling system as described. Check for coolant leaks and proper engine coolant level after engine reaches normal operating temperature.

Heat is not working - coolant was low so filled it.... problem here... heard something about an air pocket


If you dont have an external coolant leak anywhere under your hood that has shown up on your driveway it could be the intake manifold or the headgasket leaking. Also check the thermostate to solve the heat issue.

Its over heats and i put water every one or two days today i notice that a white clear container by the water hose is empty and greasy


Look at the oil on the dipstick. If its milky you have a head gasket issue. Also if you can make it to a smog machine they can sniff the coolant fumes to see if gas is in the coolant. Head Gasket again. Any repair shop has a chemical that can test for gas in the coolant also.

The theory here is if your losing water and none is leaking on the ground its got to be going into the cylinder and getting pushed out the exhaust pipe.

Now if its just overheating you may have a stuck thermostat or clogged radiator or a coolang fan that dlesnt turn on when commanded by the computer.Also if its just overheating and the water lost is going on the ground somewhere then you may not have a head gasket issue.

I just did a head gasket on a Honda because as the engine was warming up the overfill bottle would fill up and overflow. The combustion pressure was leaking into the coolant and pushing the coolant out.

Radiator fluid spewed everywhere.


a stuck closed thermostat may have caused the engine to super heat on shut down, the radiator fluid came from the surge tank as it boiled over..

Overheating


there is a coolant cap on the overflow bottle check it for seal
i'd just replace it
also if you put the new thermostat in backward the overheating would be significant

Water coolnat


First, Is there actually coolant in the over flow tank?

If the bottle is full the coolant level sensor may be bad. The sensor pulls out the bottom of the overflow reservior.

If the bottle gets low overnight there is a leak. Check the radiator side tanks for leaks. You need to look from underneath the car at the joint where the radiator meets the black tanks on the left and right sides.

You also need to look from underneath for most of the other hoses on the car, the car is turbo most likely and there are hoses that go to and from the turbos, into the cabin, and to and from the engine.
Leaks are hard to find from just looking from the top of the engine.
