Is the radiator full of coolant? if the radiator is full and you overheat quickly from a cold engine, the indication is a blown head gasket or cracked head. You can try checking the thermostat or even running without a tjermostat to be sure of the problem.

COULD BE THERMOSTAT IF TOP RADIATOR HOSE IS NOT HOT AND BOTTOM RADIATOR HOSE GOING TO WATER PUMP IS HOT THE THERMOSTAT STICKING PARTIALLY CLOSE.IF TOP HOSE IS HOT THE RADIATOR,ENGINE BLOCK HEATER CORE NEED FLUSHING OUT.IF WATER PUMP WEEP HOLE LEAKING REPLACE WATER PUMP, FAULTY WATER PUMP WILL CAUSE ENGINE TO OVER HEAT.REPLACE RADIATOR CAP MAKE SURE YOU HAVE 50 / 50 MIX SOLUTION ANTIFREEZE AND WATER IN COOLANT SYSTEM. IF ALL LOOKS GOOD CHECK ENGINE OIL ON DIP STICK, IF OIL IN DIP STICK LOOK LIKE MILKSHAKE YOU HAVE BLOWED HEAD GASKET THAT WILL CAUSE ENGINE OVERHEATING WHILE DRIVING CAR IN SHORT DISTANCE AND ENGINE OVERHEATING.

Hi i have a warning light flashing on my dash. im wondering what it is and what it means ? the symbol looks like a thermometer with wavey lines . help

That is your coolant warning. You may be low on engine coolant or your engine may be overheating. You should check your coolant level in your car and make sure all your coolant fans are working properly or have someone else check it. You don't want to be overheating and driving the vehicle. It could cause some major problems. Check it out or get someone else to. Be careful.

From your explanation it seems you are not loosing coolant so I would rule out a head gasket at this point. I would however check the "new" thermostat. Remove the thermostat and put in pot of water. Use a thermometer that will read the boiling point of water (212F 100C). Heat water and whatch that thermostat opens at its designed temperater. You can also see if the thermostat is opening by removing the rad cap when eng cold - start you eng and see if the coolant flows in the rad before the dummy light comes on. If the coolant does not flow your thermostat is stuck or improperly installed. Also be sure that your rad cap is of the proper number of LB rating for your vehice. The steam from your exhaust is normal at cold start up - it is simply condensation evaporating. That is how you can tell if a person has not let their vehicle warm up. If you follow them it will stop after vehicle reaches operating temp. Please let me know if this helps.

My car becomes hot after awhile driving

Before you do that, after you changed the thermostat, did you bleed tge air out of the system? If not, you'll still overheat. Click my screenname, go to my Tips and Tricks, and follow the procedure there for burping the cooling system and see if that fixes your overheating problem.

Buick rendezvous overheating

This is all getting to be pretty bad when no one listens!?
All Buick Rendezvous overheat! It's a badly designed system with no upper engine compartment ventilation! It's one thing to save on mileage with a hot engine but another when it's so hot it burns out all gaskets and seals everywhere! Counter productive to say to least! People are spending tons of money on repairs that are not necessary!
I bought a 2002 Rendezvous knowing full well that I could fix the overheating problem! I got a good deal on the SUV and bought it knowing it was an easy repair! The previous owner spent a bundle on new head-gaskets and still the overheating problem did not leave! I purchased it knowing full well what the problem "was" !
I did an inspection on the (engine compartment) The engine sits quite high in there and the heat of the engine has no escape from the compartment. It's closed off and the engine sits in it's own heat getting hotter and hotter destroying gaskets and all other heat related injuries ! The cooling fans direct the incoming air to the bottom and out below the problem!
My inspection shows trails where the heat did escape around the upper rubber seal at two ends over the engine compartment.. Those very small openings were the only means of heat escape, but not nearly enough! The heat there was so intense it started bubbling and blistering the paint on the hood! That was all the information I needed to be confident in the purchase of this 2002 Buick Rendezvous!
After the purchase I cut the rubber seal down away from the hood at least one inch by two feet from center...NOTE! I was also careful not to remove the guard area for rain water. The lower section of the rubber guard takes care of that. For a test to be sure I sprayed water over the windshield and not a drop spilled onto the engine.....
Well it's been two years and not one over-heating problem since...... I have photos on the work done if you like......
