If tail lights don't work, check your dimmer switch for any shorts. If the brake lights don't work, then check the brake switch behind the brake pedal. You can test them with a multitester.
For brake shoes you need socket or star wrench, and needle nose pliers for the springs unless you have a spring too. If you have disc brakes, then socket set and a c-clamp to push the pistons back in.

1-check fuses that is the most common thing 2-no special tools needed just flat head screwdriver, take one apart at a time so you can go back and check the other in case you forget how to put it back together.

How to change a brakelight bulb on 2000ford windstar van

If the brake light in question is one of the "corner" lights (regular tail light assembly brake lights in other words, not the one in the top of your rear window)

First open your back door. Look at the tail light lens, on the side towards the inside of the car, you should see 2 or 3 bolts/screws. Normally it will take a 10mm wrench/socket (note: it is much easier if you use a socket with a wratchet vs. a regular wrench). On some models the screw heads will have a star in them, this is called a "torx head", if this is what your van has you might need to purchase a set of torx tools, because when used it could be any one of three sizes. They sell multi-size torx tools at most autoparts stores and even some hardware stores.

remove the 2 or 3 bolts/screws. grab the lens assembly and wiggle it until it comes off. Sometimes it will come right off, sometimes you have to give it a little pull, dont force it but be firm.

once the lens is off, you will see either 2 or 3 sockets sticking in the back side of the assembly, one of these will be your brake light. the one on the bottom will be your reverse lights, you may need to have someone step on the brakes so you can look at the side that works to see which one is lighting up. Once you figure out which bulb it is, grasp the socket and twist, it will only go in one direction, a quarter turn should be enough to get it out.

pop the bad bulb out and put the new one in.

line up the lock tabs on the socket with the lens assembly, put it in and give a twist until its locked in place.

all that is left is putting the lens back on. line up the assembly and put it back in, from here it should be just putting the screws/bolts back in and you're on your way

How do i change the rear tail light of a 2000 ford windstar?

YOU WILL NEED TO OPEN THE REAR TAILGATE AREA ON TOP OF THE TAILLIGHT YOU WILL SEE TO SCREWS THESE SCREWS WILL HAVE TO BE REMOVED THEN THE LIGHT IS HELD IN WITH CLIPS PULL ON THE LIGHT GENTLY NOT TO BRAKE THE LIGHT. THIS WILL REMOVE THE LIGHT AND YOU WILL BE ABLE TO REPLACE THE LIGHT OR BULBS

License plate lights do not work. Bulbs changed still does not work. The right brake light does not work. Changed bulb and plug. Turning signals work, tail lights work. All works on the left side.

Well for the license plat you might wanna check the fuse. and the brake light if one works fine then I'm sure you need a new bulb in the other side. Good luck

1965 ford mustang...rear turn signals, rear emerg flashers & brake lights not working.

Are the rear bulbs OK?
Is the ground good at the rear?are the sockets good?
Are there tail lights and a license plate light?then the ground is OK.
All the things that you say do not work go through the signal light switch....it may need replacing.
First make sure the bulbs and fuses are OK and power is getting to the signal light switch and to the brake light switch.
Nice car!

2000 Windstar All brake and tail lights dead, fuse ok

A VERY common Ford issue, is grounding. a ground may look clean, but it is too dirty to allow function. find your grounds and give them a scrub with a scotch brite pad they should be nearby to the bulb, normally they rear lights all combine into one

2003 ford expedition tail turn signal light dont work bulbs are ok

You say the rear tail turn signals are not working are the fronts working? If the fronts work and the rears don't then you have a wire issue. Check the grounds for the tail lights or check and see if a trailer wire harness was put in by splicing the wires. Also check for brake lights and see if they work should be same bulb. If the fronts do not work either check fuse 18 in the fuse box should be a 10 amp or check brake fuse 2 which is a 20 amp
