Yes, if the starter is spinning freely it's basically telling you that the gear is not engaging to the fly wheel. the only way to be sure is to crawl under and take the trans dust cover off a visually inspect.

Where is starter relay switch on a 95 cirrus lx 2.5 motor located at

If the starter spins but does not engage the flywheel, either the starter is faulty or there are teeth missing from the flywheel.

I replaced my starter on my 94 ford ranger. my truck won't start, when it cranks, it makes a loud grinding noise. How can I fix this problem?

When buying starter motors it is essential that the starter pinion teeth are of the same pitch as the flywheel ring gear. Not all starters from the same make fit different engines because of this problem. However I would be checking that I had put the starter in the housing properly as any misalignment will cause your problem

Not starting

If I understand your statement correctly, noise but the engine will not "turn over." This sounds like the starter motor is running but the gear that engages the flywheel gear-teeth is not making contact at all or is moving into too-slight contact, just enough to make a lot of noise. In U.S. cars the device on the stater motor that moves the starter gear forward is called a "Bendix." As the starter motor starts to turn, the Bendix shoves a small gear forward, engaging teeth on the flywheel which spins the flywheel to start the engine. If the Bendix is sticking or has failed the gear will not move forward at all or not far enough.

Sarting with the least cost first, I'd look toward a "sticky" bendix. Try using a light penetrating oil or perhaps, WD-40 to free-up the Bendix.

Do i need a shim when replacing the starter on a 89" bronco II?

I am not certain whether you need a shim, but I would first check the flywheel for missing or worn teeth. Then check to be certain the teeth on the bendix are engaging the flywheel teeth. I hope this helps you find your problem.

Car makes loud noise starting

sounds like your starter needs shimmed and/or replaced or you have a flat spot on your flywheel. the sound your hearing is from the starter motor gears not properly aligning with the flywheel gears and quite literally grinding material off of one or the other. if you continue to force it your flywheel will need replaced if not already

Wat are some symtomes of a bad flywheel

Hi Adam, Typically a flywheel gives very little problem throughout its life span, but ca have worn on older vehicles. I'm guessing your problem occurs when engaging the starter motor? If it spins but does not always engage, it usually indicates a problem with the starter motor Bendix, but can also be related to a damaged ring gear which is mounted onto the circumference of the flywheel. Hope this answers your question? Regards John

Got a 95 mitsubishi galant 4 cil starter/flywheel noise

If this noise is really loud you will need to replace the flywheel or flexplate (if automatic transmission it is called a flexplate) and the starter, both of the gears that drive the engine rotation during start up are damaged. This damage is likely due to a bent or cracked flexplate if it is a auto transmission or a defective starter engagement drive, this causes the starter motor gear to not fully engage the flywheel gear teeth and causes damage, the damaged death cause the loud noise you here when you start the car. No matter the cause of this there is only one fix, a new flywheel or flexplate and a new starter.

My Jeep cherokee not starting after removal of flywheel. Is there a specific way to install the flywheel?

The teeth on the flywheel need to be close enough for the starter motor to catch them when it engages. If you removed it and now the starter just free-spins when starting then you may have installed the flywheel backwards and the starter motor cannot reach the teeth on the flywheel. If its making a loud grinding or pinging sound you may need to manually turn the engine a bit to align the flywheel.

What would be the problem with our toyota 4runner starter motor that when we turn the key the starter motor just makes a grinding noise, is it the starter motor or something else??

The grinding noise is the starter hitting the fly wheel. This means that the starter is spinning but may not be engaging all the way. Your Flywheel is probably missing a few teeth now. I recommend replacing starter and flywheel. If you're on a tight budget then you could just replace the starter but it will cost you more in the long run.

Cherokee intermitant grinding noise in neutral

Is it when the engine first starts? It sounds like to me that the starter is getting stuck in the fly wheel. what happens is when you go to start it, the solenoid push's the gear out and spins the gear almost one full action, the grinding noise could be the starter staying engaged after the motor has starter but quickly comes out of it after driving out of it. just a thought.
