Sensors going bad can easily cause this. If was a computer or heating issue it wouldn't start right back up. If crankshaft sensor is going bad the second it doesn't signal computer the car dies.

Starting problem

This part to replace is call neutral switch and it's linkage.

For now you can start the car in NEUTRAL and slowly move to DRIVE.

Stuck in neutral

If you can select gears then it is not stuck in neutral. To be stuck in neutral means that you can only move the lever sideways and no where else. Now the problem is probably the clutch is in constant disengaged position This is from a hydraulic lock in the system from a faulty master cylinder/ jammed cable. As 4 gear is a straight through gear( Input shaft is connected directly to out put shaft) then the 2 causes for this --one not properly engaged and 2 loose or misaligned gear box bolts at the bell housing. So check hydraulics system/ cable and check that the gear box is not loose

I have a 2005 chevy cavalier i was pulling up to get gas when all of a sudden my gear would not shift to park so i put hte emergency brake on and killed the car now it wont start what could be going on

The neutral safety switch will not let you crank the engine in anything but park and neutral. If something happens to the shift cable the trans may still be in drive.
