Question about 1998 Ford Escort
Another problem maybe the timing belt. The best thing to do if you want to try finding the problem by yourself, is to go to an auto parts store and buy a Haynes manual for your car. It will have a section on how to check your timing belt.

Hi all front wheel manual gear cars have a flywheel ? ,it does sound like a starter motor fault but that wouldnt make the car cut out while on the highway. the best way to rule both your flywheel and starter motor out is to bump start the car that way if it still dont start then it not any of them. if the car starts them im 99% sure it will be the starter motor.
