Question about 1997 Volkswagen GTI

1 Answer

I have a 1997 VW Golf with a 2.0 engine. I have replaced the fan motor, and replaced the thermostat. The problem I have is that it will go for about a mile or so then overheat and shut off. Then I have to wait for what feels like forever for it to turn on again. I have a waterpump ready to go in, but I have also been told that it may be the headgasket.. which is the problem most likely to be?

would it still be a head gasket if there is no water in the oil, no white smoke coming from the tail pipe, and the engine is running great?

If it overheats with a full radiator, then I would say head gasket. Waterpumps do not cause overheating unless they are leaking all the coolant out of the engine.

Yes, but you can try to make sure. Depending on the engine and the particular location where the gasket fails, you can get oil or coolant or combustion gasses going in every different direction. In the case where you have no coolant in the oil or in the exhaust, the gasket would have failed between the water jacket and the combustion chamber, allowing combustion gasses into the water jacket. If your head or head gasket has failed in this way, you should see a lot of air bubbles coming up the neck of the radiator with the cap off and the engine running. Let it run for a while, but don't let it overheat. Some bubbles are normal when the system has been leaking and has been refilled, but if bubbles keep coming after the engine is warm, you have a head problem. Let's hope you don't have these bubbles, and we can explore some other possibilities (thermostat installed backwards?, lower rad hose collapsing, radiator completely clogged, etc.).

I wouldn't suggest it. It wouldn't be just an engine swap that you unplug and unbolt and and then reverse...thats not to say it can't be done with a lot of thinking and work and reprogramming that's usually for vw experts...your better off to keep looking at other wreckers for the exact motor

Does the fan turn freely in your hand? possibly a faulty thermostat on the radiator or the water pump isn't working (your car would probably be dead)

Where is the thermostat located on golf v1 1999 1.6,car been standing 6 months worked fine now water not circulating!!!!!!

Heed of antifreeze coolant temperature!!!
First time you might check the thermostat operating.
The thermostat location for VW Golf 1.6 is inside of coolant thermostat housing placed on back side of the cylinder head. See pictures below.
Thermostat checking:
1. Cold engine. Start up the engine and watch of the water temp indicator. After first value 60 Celsius Degree you still warm up the engine until the lifter (pointer) reach 80 C deg. (second mark after 60 C deg.). At this time you let engine running at idle speed and check with your hand the thermostat plastic housing and hose temperature in bottom left side of the engine. Heed of alternator driving belt and ventilator fan !!!
2. If the thermostat is good the hose must be cold until the water temp indicator reach almost 90 C deg.
3. The thermostat opening temperature is 87 C deg.
4. If the hose is already warm the thermostat is out of order.

Thermostat location, Part number: 032121110B, in german - "Kuehlregle" (Price around $20):

Important note: Always replace the thermostat round seal, position 6 in the above picture.

follow top radiator hose to motor, at motor that should be your thermostat housing, pull 2 bolts out holding it @ remove housing, thermostat is under, replace thermostat exactly as you removed it, you will need a new gasket also.

Thermostat for VW golf 1996 The temp gauge raised to almost 220 but water temp light did not flush at all. Is it possible that the car has no thermostat?

Hi,
Usually if a vehicle has NO thermostat the engine runs too cold for to long. So I suspect your VW has a thermostat. Suggest you check to make sure you have ample antifreeze, and that the fan is working properly. If those two things are O.K. then a blocked radiator or water pump issue will need to be checked out. With a 50/50 mix of antifreeze 220 degrees will not harm your engine. Good Luck.

It sounds like the hydraulic lifters are bleeding down after sitting for a while... there are ball checks which are supposed to prevent this... Try using a good engine flush (a product that frees sticky lifters) and replace the oil with a good synthetic... Hope this helps...;-)

Thermostat location for VW Golf 1997

Wait, your water pump is leaking? if so, that is your problem. Water pumps will slowly leak coolant if their about to go. The thermostat can get stuck open or closed. I'm not sure where it is located in a VW Golf 1997, but it is most-likely a pain to get to it should be done professionally.
