The three things your vehicle needs is spark fuel and air. so check to see if all your wires are getting good spark. now for the air you have the air filter then right behind it you have your mass airflow sensor then you will follow the air induction up to your throtel body. make sure your throtel body is in good working condition I.E depending on if you have a electronic throtel body or the old cable version you also may clean the throtel body along with the mas airflow sensor. in the rear of the air induction there is yet another sensor called the map sensor check this for serviceabity also. if this does not solve the problem your fuel lift pump in your fuel tank will have a constant hum to it easy way to tell if this is the isue is unhook your fuel supply line and turn the key to the on position this will tell you if your fuel lift pump is working another thing to check is the charcol canister it may be clogged

I suppose its possible the alternator stopped charging the battery enough at the low engine speed but then worked on the way home.
The alternator will charge 12 - 13 volts at idle, but you could have enough accessories and the cooling fan running to use more voltage or amps than it is producing. Stopping at a traffic light for a couple of minutes does not hurt anything since the battery is usually fully charged. But idling for an hour or more with everything on could run the battery down.
You might want to have the computer checked for codes even tho the check engine light may not have been on. Also have the alternator and battery tested again to see if something happened while in heavy traffic.

More then likely you need to change the spark plugs because they are fouling out. Thats the cheapest fix that I would do first! Then check coils.

check the coolant in the radiator. Once the car is up to temp (engine running), squeeze the top radiator hose, if it is cold, then you have an airlock. Let the engine cool, remove radiator cap and run the engine for 20 minutes, topping up the coolant when it lowers.

The AC might need recharged at the same time with Freon.

Hope this helps.

My 2005 Kia Sedona's check engine light just came on a few minutes ago. We are on vacation and have a 6 hour drive home on Saturday. Do you think I can wait until then to get it looked at back home?

Probably, it could be something as simple as a lose gas cap, or a ad o2 sensor. You can take it to any local autozone and get them to scan the codes to tell you what it is. The scan is free.

Your explaining a stopped up exhaust. This can happen to any car. (Bannanas in the tailpipe) The old car can have a bad cat. converter thats in the exhaust system. This part needs help to fail, so after the cat. is changed the car has to be checked to find the cause of the failure as the new one will fail and their not cheap. Misfireing , burning oil , or antifreeze, EGR valve not working or some sheade tree hotrodding can make converters fail too. It's illegal to remove a converter and not put the right part back on, Theres jail time and big fines for those that get caught.

OVerheating and dumping antifreeze

sounds like you have a fan issue if it over heated while you had ac on and was stopped it would not cool the engine or the condensor try turning the vehicle on turn the ac on with hood open spray the condensor with water hose it is in the very front of the car see if ac starts blowing colder most people overlook the basics.

Trans shifts very hard after 5 minutes of stop and go traffic

A reason for hard shifting could be a problem with many things with various degrees of seriousness. It could be your ATF( automatic transmission fluid) is low or broken down and old. This would cause the hardness and the reason for stop and go traffic effecting it. Another possibility is your transmission is just shot, and the timing gears inside are worn and not properly shifting at the correct RPM causing a **** during shifting.

Some possibilties, not all!
