Question about Buick Riviera

We just bought a 1995 Buick Riviera, but the air is not cold. The seller said it just needed a freon charge. What type does it take?

WRONG! it has a leak, and on this year the compressor is always the problem and will need to be replaced, it uses R134, it is very expensive and it will leak out right away, within hours. I am a GM trained tech and am sure of this solution.

R134a since 1992 or so GMs. I remember that r134a was just starting to get off the ground back then, so I believe the 1995 Buick Riviera has the quick connectors on the low side of the air conditioning plumbing coming off of the compressor.

The low pressure side plumbing is always thicker than the high pressure side.

There may be a quick connector on the canister that is on the low pressure side that looks like a large round soup can.

Don't worry about hooking the hose and can of r134a up to the wrong side, as the end will not fit on the high side.

One can also get a can of 'arctic freeze' r134a refrigerant by Intermatics from your local auto parts store or Walmart for about $32 and hopefully that's all that it needs.

This is an inexpensive way to recharge the a/c in most GM cars from 1992 on up.

Good luck on the repair.

A mechanic would check the system with a set of pressure gauges. If the compressor is running, the low side would read around 30psi and the high side would be around 250psi. That is how you know if the system is full of freon or not.
You may have to get a professional diagnosis to proceed. If you replace the compressor, the accumulator needs to be replaced and a vac pump is used to pull all of the air out before the freon is added.

Check for vacuum leaks and EGR operation - If no vac leaks, I'd bet it was the IAC-AAC Valve -(Idle air control/Aux.Air control) - It can sometimes be cleaned and lubricated, but it depends - I usually replace them when I have determined that to be the problem...Hope that helps or gives you a start point...
