You need to find out what codes are set causing the CHECK ENGINE light to illuminate. GO to any Advance Auto or AutoZone and they will read the codes for free. Do not assume that just because a code mentions a part that the part is faulty, especially if there are multiple codes set. Come back here and tell us the codes and we can help you determine your problem. Without the code(s), there are dozens of things that can set the CHECK ENGINE light.
It can mean one of two things. Either your oil level is too low, meaning more than 1 quart, or your pressure is too low. The first thing to do is check the oil level in the engine and top it up. If the light goes out after this then everything is okay. If the light stays on you should get the oil pressure checked with a mechanical guage to get an accurate reading.
Get this done as soon as possible. Manufacturers don't give you much room with these lights, when they come on you are very close to the engine meltdown point. Hope this helps.
The easiest thing to do is to go to Auto Zone or Advance Auto Parts, and they can scan the computer and tell you what the check engine light is on for.
im guessing that the service engine light is comming on and off instead of staying on all of the time. these service lights come on for a long list of things. this is the time of year when we tend to use all of the power option in our cars. light wipers heater ect it is also this time of year that we find out how good our charging system is working and how good our batteries are. control voltage in most vehichles is between 12.5vdc and 14vdc check engine lights can come on when your control voltage falls below this given level. warning lights could be caused by a sticking thermistat. the difference in temperature from hot water in to cooler fluid out of the radiator should be roughly 6 degrees from top to bottom higher or lower ranges may cause this to light up the check engine light. and there are a host of other minor things that will make the light come on and off. washer fluid levels, brake fluid level being low but not fatal. a missfiring plug at a certain rpm due to carbon build up inside the distributor cap. alot of genaral maintinace type things create this onand off scenario.
Many things can cause this problem...unfortunately the only proven way to remidy this situation is to have your car scanned by a reputable mechanic with a diagonstic machine $40-$80. This will tell what exactly is causing the check engine light to come on, in the long run its much cheaper replacing whats wrong than trying to replace things that arnt wrong.
It could be many things making you engine light come on. I would suggest taking it to auto zone or advance auto if you have one in your area they will check your trouble codes for free . With out knowing what trouble code is making your engine light come on I can not tell you witch part is bad.
Yes, the gas cap will cause the Check Engine Light to come on. Will set code P0441 if I remember correctly. It should be okay to drive it. If you would like to confirm the code, take the truck to an auto parts store like Autozone and have them hook up their scan tool and read the code. If its P0441 it will probably be something like EVAP or Evaporative system leak.
Its an easy enough fix while your there too, just pick up a new gas cap or you could pick up an OEM one from the dealership.
