If you mean valve timing (there is no adjustment for ignition timing), see diagram below from autozone.com. Make sure belt is tight on the right side with gears in these positions:

Is the 2001 Ford Escort an interference engine?

Yes the single and double overhead cam engines are both interference engines.
So you have a 50/50 chance the valves are damaged if the belt broke while the engine was running.
Most people replace the belt then check compression before putting the engine front back together.

Change sepertine belt on engine.

it is not that fun, you need to have 1/4 inch tools, 10mm socket 8mm socket, 12 mm socket,18mm socket. and wrenches to match. you need to support car on jack stands and remove pass tire. Go to your local auto parts store and get a manual first. as the valve timing is very critical in the installation process !!!!!!!!!!! if this timing is not done exactly you will cause severe engine damage to valves and pistons. read manual and read again then assemble it right the first time as there is no room for error. Belt is 30 -50 $$$ depending where you go.

1997 ford escort timing belt r&r instructions 2.0 L

Look here: http://www.autozone.com/autozone/repairinfo/repairguide/repairGuideContent.jsp?pageId=0900c1528008daae

registration at autozone.com is free. There are 4 engines at this page. The last 2 are 2.0L--one with single cam and one with dual cam. If you haven't changed a timing belt before, I recommend you get help. Belt must be exactly right or you could damage the engine.
