nor its regulator.
then you shift to drive, and 1st gear is picked, by you or TCM
if there are no gross leaks in the upper parts of this nice drawing
the 1st gear Piston closes the band or clutch pack to caused 1st gear to ENGAGE.
if the pump sucks air (filter packed up or cracked) this is easy fix.
if the pan is dry or ATF fluid so low the filter sucks air it fails.
see ????????? the real drawing is way way more complex.
for sure 6L80e and now 10 speed boxes. crazy complex and love to fail today. (eco trans fail)
even the shift lever broken bottom side. sure. or cables to it.

A604 (41TE)(or 40TE)
on TCM trans(E) code governor is gone, now has sensors. and solenoids do the shifts. (no more shift valve center)
A simple drawing makes it much more easy to know what is wrong.
basics, any leak that overwhelms the pump is failure. hard.
some times 1st fail but ReV works due rev is lower gear, and more powerful. or you get false neutrals. at any time.
