1983 nissan z24 timing chained replaced, now engine won't start

It is best to change only one thing at a time to keep things simple. I recommend verifying that the timing chain is in the correct position, don't run it any other way. You might need or want to adjust the spark advance / timing if it is adjustable. Join and check with the nissan forums with some that has specific knowledge of that car.

Timing chain

bent push rods could have been caused when the chain broke and not from the chain been replaced wrong or the timing out.

if the engine was running when the chain broke the cam would have stopped leaving all the valves in the same positon as the mometum of the fly wheel continued to turn the pistons in the cylendars could hav come up and hitting the valves and bending the push rods. and or damaging the cylendar head.

recommend removing the head and have it checked for damage, as well as replacing the bent push rods, and cylendar gaskit. once the head is checked and the valves are seated well. then replace and follow instructions in the set up for the pistons and cam prior to replacing the chain and setting the timing.

I hope this was helpful.

Need to know if the 1993 maxima has a timing belt or a timing chain and when it needs to be replaced

if you have a SOHC engine you have a timing belt and it should be replaced every 80,000 mi. if you have a DOHC engine you have timing chains and their is no set mileage to replace them.

Just the guide is probably making the noise. So either a new guide or a new chain. I would start with guide first, unless chain looks loose or cruddy

1991 buick park ave. does it have a timing belt or chain. if belt when does it need replacing?

this car uses a timing chain, there is no set time interval to replace a timing chain, they last the life of the car in most cases.

Do timimg chains need to be replaced (not a belt)?

Timing chains do need to be replaced but they can typically go much longer between being serviced than can timing belts. The chain will stretch out over time and can 'jump' timing. If you have an interference engine then that can prove disastrous as the piston can crash into the valves.

Its not terribly common for a timing chain to jump timing but not impossible. I have a vehicle with nearly 120k with a timing chain and its never been replaced and is still in good shape, I have another vehicle with 170k also with a timing chain that has never been replaced.

If it were me and I was going to be doing some work in that area and had easy enough access to the timing chain, and the mileage was getting up there, I would replace it. Timing chains typically also have a tensioner, so if you replace it, dont forget this item.
