Question about 1999 Saab 9-5

1 Answer

My 99 Saab 9-5 won't start and when you shut off the ignition a vacuum motor on the drivers side keeps on running and will wear the battery down unless you disconnect the battery. When you reconnect the battery the vacuum motor does start running until you try to start the engine again. Could this be a bad relay?

By won't start, you mean the engine turns over and won't start or the engine will not turn over. This is an interesting problem. Please reply with the answer to the above question and we can go from there.

I have a Saab 9-5 2001 sluggish take off when warm and fine take off when cold

I had the sane problem with my 2000 Saab Aero 2.3t at 135,000 mi. I took the black plastic cowl off from around the oil fill cap and intake to inspect vacuum lines and found a small line on the intake ( just beneath the clamp on the large rubber boot covering the intake facing me ) had come off. I replaced the line ( vacuum hose ) on the exposed fitting there on the front and test drove the car for 45 minutes with stops about every 15 min to park and shut off the motor. The problem was/is gone. I followed the line to the firewall area and a small vacuum canister that feeds the vacuum module on the air bypass tube next the radiator on the driver side. Don't know the technical terms for the parts but the problem surely has to do with that circuit which also has an electrical connection on the firewall intersecting canister. Hope this helps someone. I was lost.

1999 saab 9-5 while driving it is jerking, at times it does not start without a jump

If the battery cable are not corroded, replace the battery. The battery is a very important component of an electrical system. Any check engine lights? 99 models often have a hole burned into the turbo hose on the right side of the car.

Saab 93 1.9 tid warning battery not charging car died whilst driving charged battery at home car now starting lights all out is this battery prob or alternator?

The easiest way to check is with the car running, disconnect the positve side of the battery, if the car dies, then it is the altenator, if the car keeps running then it is the battery. If you have a volt ohm meter, check the chrge going to the battery you should get between 12 and 14 volts if it is lower than 12 you have an altenator issue. the altenator should always produce enough to charge the battery and run the car at the same time, if not then the battery wears down.

My son was playing radio , now my keys are stuck in the ignition and all the power system is shut off. i started the car by jump start but all the power system is not working and the keys are still stuck...

When the PASS-Key® III system senses that someone is using the wrong key, it shuts down the vehicle's starter and fuel systems.

I suggest check in this link the 2007 SAAB 9-7X - Owners Manual, section THEFT and PASSLOCK SYSTEMS (page 90 and next).

Keep us updated.

Hi,
Sounds like a bad starter relay. When you turn your key to start, current flows through a relay which in turns supplies 12 volts to the solenoid on your starter motor. As you alluded to , typically the common clicking sound that we all hear occasionally, is usually related to a flat battery or bad starter motor, but as you have had these checked (by a professional?) the only possibility is the relay that supplies 12 volts DC to your starter motor solenoid.
Thought you might find this interesting to help you understand ignition systems:

My 2001 saab 9-3 will not start when hot new start and relay but it will not start when hot

take out the ignition module and have it tested for free at autozone .
the module is getting hot and shutting down it sounds like.

one thing you can test is when it wont start spray some starter spray in it and see if it starts and dies out.
this will conferm fuel or ignition.
i think its ignition though.

keep me posted
hope this does it.

thank you

Saab 9-5 Aero Wagon 2000 wont restart when warm or after running

I have a 1999 Saab 9-5. I had a similiar problem. The car would always run cold. It would get hot and the engine would quit. It could be anywhere. One mile from start to 50 miles from start. Once it cooled down it would re-start but the cool down time was always different. Only difference for me was my car would crank, just not run. Replaced the crank position sensor ($60), no more problems! Good luck!
