Question about Peugeot 405

Possible that the thermostat is not working.This means that either the temperature sensor is not working which is fixed on the engine or the sensor trigger unit with the relay is not working.
You can trace the temperature sensor to the unit and check by triggering the relay. if this works the fan then the sensor might be faulty or the fan can be defective.
In the first place please check the fuse of the fan in the engine room relay box.

Fan does not want to kick in

2008 corsa utility overheating & water is boiling & pushing out through the water bottle


I see two possible causes.
1) Something is blocking air from cooling the radiator. Is there any debris like leaves blocking the radiator?
2) Something is preventing coolant from flowing through the engine. Could be a water pump failure.
Make sure your engine old level is within proper range.

Obviously your Spirit is a small front wheel drive vehicle which has a transverse mounted engine. Therefore, it will have an Electric Cooling Fan mounted directly behind the Radiator and operated by a Thermostat in the Hose connecting the Engine to the Radiator. Open the Hood and take a good look at everything under it. One can learn the basics by observation which will help you in many ways. Such as: Windshield Washer Reservoir, Coolant Recovery Tank/Filler, Automatic Transmission Dip Stick (Red Handle), Oil Dipstick (Yellow Handle), Power Steering Pump & Reservoir and many other things such as Serpentine Accessory Drive Belt(s) and Battery.

Turbo Radiator Fan

The radiator cooling fan is a variable speed electric motor driven fan. The radiator fan assembly includes an electric motor, fan blade, and a support shroud that is attached to the radiator. The radiator fan is serviced as an assembly (fan motor/fan/shroud).

The variable speed radiator fan is controlled by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) by way of a Pulse Width Modulated (PWM) signal. The duty cycle ranges from 30% for low speed operation then ramps-up to 100% for high-speed operation. This fan control system provides infinitely variable fan speeds, allowing for improved fan noise, A/C performance, better engine cooling, and additional vehicle power.

To control radiator fan operation, the PCM looks at inputs from:

Engine coolant temperature
A/C pressure transducer
Ambient temperature
Vehicle speed
Transmission oil temperature (automatic transmission only

I have a 2002 4x4 Grand Cherokee Laredo 6 cyl. automatic. Engine sounds like the engine is idling high but it is only 700 RPM.at idle. Does this sound like a harmonic balancer?


It may be the radiator fan making all that racket. Usually when the engine is cold, the thermal fan clutch allows more "slip" --- this allows the fan to turn slower than the water pump pulley (less load on the engine). When the fan clutch detects more engine heat, it reduces slippage of the fan clutch and this results in the fan turning "faster". It's actually turning at the same speed as the water pump pulley. The "roaring" noise is the result of the fan pulling in more air through the radiator.

If the noise is present at all times, whether or not the engine is hot or cold, then the fan clutch might be malfunctioning.

Your English is very good.

From what you have described, which is a rapid over heating of the radiator coolant fluid and therefore a hot engine condition, it would appear that the thermostat in the engine's cooling system is faulty.

If the thermostat is sticking in the closed or nearly closed position temporarily, there will be no flow or very little coolant flow between the engine and the radiator and the engine will overheat.

You have advised that after the engine is shut off , and radiator coolant fluid has cooled, you re-start the engine and drive the car without the overheating condition occurring again and the radiator coolant temperature is normal. This time there is no overheating because the thermostat is working normally.

You should have the thermostat replaced as soon as possible because allowing the engine to overheat can cause very expensive engine damage.

If you had a continuing overheating condition then I would suspect both the thermostat and the water pump. However as the overheating seems to be only temporary, and clears itself after you have shut down the engine and re-started it 10 minutes later (without further overheating arising) then I think you only have a faulty thermostat.

Please also check that the electric fans which draw air through the radiator are operating. These run on a temperature sensor and will switch on automatically once the radiator coolant fluid reaches a certain temperature and then switch off again when the fluid temperature reduces. You will hear them running once they start up. If these fans are not working the radiator coolant can quickly overheat in various driving and temperature conditions because there will be insufficient air flow through the radiator to cool the fluid. If the temperature sensor is faulty or has died, or if the electric motors running the fans are faulty, the fans will not operate.

Check for proper cooling fan operation (it's an electric fan behind radiator). It might even have a dual cooling fan. On most systems, one fan will come on and run continually anytime the a/c is on. This is commanded on by the ECM. If the cooling fan is not running, then there is no air flow across either the a/c condenser nor the engine radiator. The engine will therefore run hot and the compressed gas (freon) in the a/c cannot cool at the condenser - thus it will not cool the cabin properly. If the fault is indeed a cooling fan problem then you can proceed to troubleshoot that issue. Come back here for help if needed to sort it out.

Check your cooling fan motor at radiator, should come on at about 220 -225 deg, while moving you have air blowing through radiator and will keep engine cool, at stops no air going through radiator and will cause over heating. Have fan check out

Finding the thermostat in a 1987 suzuki swift


Not familiar with your vehicle but engines of that period will normally have them hidden under a fitting that probably is a diamond-shaped cast aluminum piece with one of the radiator hoses leading to it and held in place by two (rarely more) bolts.
It will be either on the head or the block.

Just follow the (large) hoses from the radiator and the one with a fitting as described will likely have the thermostat concealed under it.
