Couple of things to check a)Is the coolant sensor connector clean and and in good order and are the wires OK? b)Is the throttle throat and plate clean? c)Is the idle air control valve and associated ports on the throttle clean? If the IAC is acting up the car will stall at cold idle if you engage the power steering or engage gear (automatic), basically any additinal load on the engine just kills it Are the spark plugs in good order with correct gaps and do they all look the same as each other? Are the plug holders free of indications (burns and tracking) of shorting through to the cylinder head?

My 1986 mercedes 300e runs hot i replaced the thermastat

Hi,first of all worm the car up to running tempriture, put your hand on the water pipe that is coming from the fermastate is it hot if so try the one at the bottom of the radiater to see if that is hot if that is hot then the radiater is fine, nexst turn engine off, then undo the oil cap to see if your oil has a musterd colour for oil if oil is ok,then you will have to do a compresion test to see if there is one of your cylinders has low compresion.
some times you can have a broken head gasket which can couse uneven running due to water going into the cylinder.
I hope its not bad and a easy fix this is just to give you food for thought, best of luck.

Your automatic choke is probably sticking. Spray it out with 2+2 Carb and Choke Cleaner. Do this when the car is cold so you don't start a fire. While the car is running see what position the choke butterfly is in when the engine is hot. If it is partially closed you may have a bad spring in the choke mechanism or it may need an adjustment.
